Backward pass?

Quarterback’s arm is moving forward and he gets drilled from the back side while throwing.  The ball lands incomplete but 5 yards behind where he threw the ball.   Just incomplete due to the hit or do I have a live ball due to it landing backwards form where it was thrown?

Where the ball lands is immaterial.  The issue is; did YOU judge whether the QB was in the act of passing before being hit (result is an incomplete pass) or did YOU judge the hit caused a fumble.

We judged the QB was in the act of throwing when he was hit.

We had a crazy one several years ago that I'll throw out to you guys.....

(1)  QB was in pocket and passing arm was moving forward;
(2) QB was grabbed by DT with arm still moving:
(3) QB spun around as pass leaves his hand;
(4) pass lands backwards;
(5) B player scoops up ball and heads into endzone…

I was lucky enough to be the white hat. You make your call and I'll tell you mine  tiphat:

The way I understand this philosophy:
1. If the arm is moving forward and the ball is dislodged by the contact, incomplete pass.
2. If the ball is actually propelled by the arm, then direction matters.

Based on the information I have, probably backward pass and a score.

Thanks, Calhoun, for your response. Neither of the coaches were happy with my call but I ruled that when he was spun around his forward progress was stopped.

COACH B wanted a TD  ^good

COACH A wanted an incomplete pass  ^no

I felt it was fair to rule a sack as the QBs forward progress was stopped when he was in the grasp and no longer progressing forward. It was a play you'd need to see to call. Sorry, that's way beyond my skill set :o.

If the pass was not forward, I'd rule it a backwards pass.

From the description, I’d have a  ^good.  The defense beat the offense on that play.  I certainly wouldn't have been quick enough on my feet to rule forward progress, although that’s not a bad idea if you can get away with it.

From 2019 Redding Study Guide page 33, EXAMPLE 5-2, "A7 drops back to the A-25.  As A7's arm starts forward (a) he is grabbed by B66 who twists A7's body, or (b) B66 strikes A7's arm. In both cases, the ball lands near A82 at the A-23.  RULING: In (a) and (b), an incomplete forward pass.  Although the ball landed behind the spot from where it was thrown, it is a forward pass because the contact altered the flight of the ball."

I agree this was a incomplete pass, as the quarterbacks arm had started Forward.  Redding covers this well.
