S/B Weekly Quiz 10
« on: November 05, 2020, 10:05:46 PM »
My responses:

1. Try Down @ B-18. The try has been relocated to the B-18 because of an OPI called on the original Try. QB A12 drops to pass and scrambles toward the goal line. A12 is tackled at the B-2 by the facemask. After enforcement, Team A requests the ball be placed on the right hashmark.
RULING: ______________│______________│______________│______________
A, Try, B-1, right hash mark, no game clock (25).
The facemask foul is penalized ˝ the distance from the end of the run (B-2), to the B-1. Team A may request the ball to place anywhere on/between the hash marks, unless the down is preceded by a Team A foul, or offsetting fouls. Neither of those conditions existed, so Team A may have the ball placed at the right hashmark.

2. 1/10 @ A-34. On a run or pass option play, wide receiver A82 is lined up 12 yards to the right of the snapper at the snap. A82 moves downfield and then returns toward the neutral zone. The ball has left the tackle box when A82 blocks B21 below the waist in the “10-to-2” region directly at B21’s front and slightly toward Team A’s end line at the A-37. Ball carrier A44 is tackled at the A-38.
RULING: ______________│______________│______________│______________
A, 1/22, A-22, ready (?) (25).
After the ball has left the tackle box, Team A may not block below the waist toward its own end line. The 15-yard penalty is enforced from the spot of the foul (A-37), back to the A-22. Assuming A44 was tackled inbounds, the game clock will next start on the referee’s signal. Due to the completion of the penalty, the play clock is set to 25 seconds, and will start on the referee’s signal.

3. Free Kick @ A-35. B82 is standing at the B-19 when he signals for a fair catch. B82 muffs the ball and it bounces forward and is recovered by B81 at the B-24.
RULING: ______________│______________│______________│______________
B, 1/10, B-24, snap (40-automatic).
A recovery by Team B of a legally free-kicked ball belongs to Team B at the spot of the recovery, if the recovery was preceded by a valid or invalid fair catch signal (regardless if the ball was muffed or touched by B prior to the recovery). The game clock will next start on the snap. The play clock should be set to 40-seconds and started automatically by the PCO when the ball became dead following the free kick down.

4. 1/10 @ A-20. After passer A12 releases the ball at the A-15, B68 takes two strides and charges into A12, showing no attempt to avoid contact. The ball is caught by A88 at the A-35 and he runs to the A-40 where he fumbles. The fumble is recovered by B55 at the A-45.
RULING: ______________│______________│______________│______________
A, 1/10, A-35, ready (25).
B68 commits a foul for roughing the passer (RPS). The 15-yard penalty for RPS is enforced at the previous spot, when Team B is in possession of the ball at end of the down. The penalty includes an automatic first down. Since Team B will NOT next snap the ball, the game clock will next start on the referee’s signal. Due to the completion of the penalty, the play clock is set to 25 seconds, and will start on the referee’s signal.

5. Team A attempts a place kick on the try. A Team B player in the end zone leaps above the crossbar and bats the ball in flight. The ball goes out of bounds in the end zone.
RULING: ______________│______________│______________│______________
A, try, B-1 ˝ (assuming the try was from the B-3), no game clock (25).
The Team B player commits an illegal batting foul. The penalty is enforced at the previous spot, ˝ the distance to the goal, and the try is repeated.

6. 3/12 @ A-1. A25 is in his end zone when he receives the handoff from A12. Still in the end zone, A25 fumbles the ball. It goes into the field of play and rolls out of bounds at the A-2.
RULING: ______________│______________│______________│______________
A, Free Kick after a safety, free kick timing (25).
Due to the forward fumble out of bounds, the ball is returned to the spot of the fumble, which is in Team A’s end zone. Team A is responsible for the ball being in their end zone when A12 carried the ball into the end zone. The result of the down is a safety, 2-points for Team B, and is followed by a free kick by A from the A-20. The game clock will next start according to free kick timing rules, and the play clock is set to 25 seconds, and will start on the referee’s signal.

7. 2/10 @ B-30. QB A12 runs up to the B-28 before throwing a forward pass. B40 intercepts at the B-20 and returns to the B-35 where he is driven out of bounds. B66 clips at the B-32 during the return.
RULING: ______________│______________│______________│______________
B, 1/10, B-17, snap (25).
Team B will use the ‘clean hands’ provision of penalty enforcement, and keep the ball by declining the illegal forward pass penalty. Team A will then accept the 15-yard penalty for the clipping foul, penalized from the spot of the foul (B-32), to the B-15. The game clock will next start on the snap, and the play clock is set to 25 seconds, and will start on the referee’s signal.

8. 4/15 @ B-30, Extra Periods. In the first possession series, Team A’s field goal attempt is tipped by B50 behind the line and the kick is unsuccessful. B47 is the first to touch the ball, muffing it at the B-20. A26 recovers the ball at the B-17.
RULING: ______________│______________│______________│______________
B, 1/10, 25 yard line, no game clock (25).
The legal scrimmage kick officially crossed the neutral zone (at least with B47’s touching, if not by touching the ground beyond the NZ). By crossing the NZ, Team A’s down series is broken, so their possession series in the extra period is over. Team B’s possession series begins at the same 25 yard line that Team A’s series started. There is no game clock in extra periods. For the first down of B’s series, the play clock is set to 25 seconds, and will start on the referee’s signal.

What'd I miss this week?

I concur, except for:

(2)  Two really small quibbles.  First, although it's fairly obvious that B will accept the penalty, I would still quickly check for the coach's choice.  Second, on a quiz, absent information that it's near the end of a half, the clock will be RFP regardless if the run ends in or out of bounds.

(8)  A 1/10 B17. No game clock. 25 sec. There has been nothing happen on this play to end A's possession series.

Sure, on checking with the coach. And I said the clock would start on the ready. But, I did put the question mark there for the very reason you stated.

(8)  A 1/10 B17. No game clock. 25 sec. There has been nothing happen on this play to end A's possession series.
Correct. For whatever incorrect reason, I had it in my mind that, when a down series was broken, the possession series was also ended. No.  And there is an AR very similar to this which clearly indicates that. Thanks.
