B intercepts in his own end zone starts to run out fumbles the ball in his own end zone were A recovers what do you have a TD or is it ruled a touchback?

Ok, what would you do if you were the R for this game?

I would go to the BJ or whatever he was (no placards) and say, I heard you blow the whistle when he intercepted, CORRECT!!! His answer better be Yes Sir. Coach the play and game are over.

Sometimes you can't protect young men from situations that no one would think might happen. In this case the BJ did. It was the right outcome.

I absolutely would not do that. I would go to him and say what did you see? The second question would be did you or anyone else blow it dead? If that question is no then I would say, we have a fumble in the end zone and a touchdown. I’m not bailing a player out because he doesn’t know the rules. As far as I can tell from this clip the officials did nothing wrong except not award the TD.

That would be like awarding a score if the runner mistakenly dropped the ball after crossing the 5. None of us would do that. (I hope)

I agree that by the book, it was a touchdown if the whistle wasn't blown. But the official put the whistle in his mouth. I am ASSUMINMG that he blew it. Once again assuming that this is the case, the last team in possession can take the result of the play or redo the play. Let's assume they would take the play at the time of blowing the whistle. Touchback, game over.

So once again, BJ I did hear you blow the whistle, right?

Yeah, I’m not buying. I can hear the band, people talking, the crowd, but I never hear the whistle. Plus, even though he brought it up, you can see he never blew it. He was as surprised as everybody when the kid started to run with it. Then when he dropped it he’s still wondering what to do. Plus the players in the other team certainly didn’t stop playing. One of them fell on it and the others instantly knew it was or should have been a td.

My hometown team very nearly lost a playoff game on a play similar to this one. The other team was behind by 5 and driving. Last play they throw a pass and our guy intercepts it. Horn on scoreboard goes off. Our kid thinking the game is over throws it up in the air and starts celebrating. Kid in other team catches it and starts running. One of our guys (a sub who came off the bench to celebrate) tackles him a the 2. Nobody catches it and we win.

most unfortunate situation but here's what I see, the defender after intercepting briefly looks like he is going to drop to a knee and then he might have heard a whistle and then is running towards his teammates to celebrate. I think awarding a touchdown to A in this situation would be a travesty.

Look at the reaction from 13 gray. He obviously didn’t hear a whistle. Looks to me like he was wondering why in the h did his teammate just drop the ball.

Calhoun, i know we can't be mind readers but look again at the defender. he briefly dips his knee, then steps aside to avoid a potential hit as he is running towards his teammates and tosses the ball aside as he does. I don't know what I would have done in this situation if I had been the back judge but I just wouldn't want to be him because it's a tough situation.

Yeah I don’t see the defender going toward a knee either. I see him dodging the defender sure. I’ll also agree he thought the game was over so he dropped the ball and started celebrating. I also agree we are not mind readers so what he thought doesn’t matter. Only what he did mattered. He did drop a live ball which was recovered by the opponents in the end zone. If there was no whistle that’s a TD. And as far as I can tell from the video and audio there’s no evidence of a whistle. In fact the officiating crew never rule an IW.

Same... my initial reaction would probably be to yell 'LIVE BALL, LIVE BALL' in the hopes he would realize his error and get back on it before A does. (Even though that's probably not right either.)

I am somewhat of an expert on teenagers, having raised four of them, and having once been one myself.

Due to their still-developing pre-frontal cortexes, teenagers sometimes do really stupid things.
