Use of Radios by Officials

Does anyone have a written protocol that their association has adopted for the use of wireless radios by on field officials?

We have used radios in our chapter for about 4 years now.  It really improves the communication, mainly between the wings so if there is a foul on one side of the field it can quickly be relayed to the other side. Very useful for the BJ and White Hat to easily communicate. The only thing I will tell you is your chapter should get together and buy ALL the same radios....that way if you are not with your normal crew, you can bring your radio.  They are all NOT interchangeable....we found that out early.  For playoffs the white hats bought a 10 pack so we just bring our own earpiece to those games and plug them in.

Thank you for the link. Our association does not have a written protocol for the use of the radios and it is hit or miss with them. Some officials have them, others don't, mix and mash units, etc., and it is a mess. I have been tasked with coming up with a protocol to be adopted by the association by laws concerning their use. This really helps.

The protocols we use in GB and in IFAF are part of our mechanics:

As an association in GB we have a radio license to cover all our members while they are officiating, and we also have a standard set of channels/frequencies that we are licensed to use (a standard license allocates 3 separate frequencies from within the licensed range).

We've also made configuration files which can be applied directly to various handsets to program them to our standard config (my personal choice is the Baofeng UV-5R family, but the most commonly used is the Retevis H-777/Baofeng BF-888).

Of course, YMMV as I'm not familiar with the equivalent laws and requirements in the USA.

Used well, they are a great addition to the toolbox.
