Another NFHS Question

Watching the All Amer game today from San Antonio , short free kick , ball goes high off the tee, travels about 15 yards where a Team A player leaps in air, grabs ball and collided with Team B player waiting to catch the ball.  Team A players teammates go crazy celebrating him.  The game is played under NCAA rules and that is KCI.  The crew had the flag ( but botched enforcement ). Even Team A coach seemed to think the recovery was legal.

Yes, that's a foul under NFHS as well.  In fact, it doesn't matter that B was in position to catch the free kick.  Under NFHS, A can't be the first to touch a free kick in flight, regardless.

How was it enforced? Inquiring minds want to know.  :)

Oh, dear. If the receiving got the ball on the re-kick, maybe not “catastrophic,” but huge.The field position difference was probably significant. Crew error.

Interestingly, 15 yards from the previous spot and rekick is an allowed penalty in NFHS in this scenario. You *wouldn't* do that, but you could by the book.

The "correct" enforcement is the same as NCAA, awarded fair catch plus 15 yards from the spot of the foul.

A number of changes in the NFHS code, over a period of years, differing from NCAA rules have been motivated by the desire to eliminate "replays" that provide a higher risk factor for "Player Safety".  Some of these options have found their way into both NCAA as well as NFL rules.
