New Rule Phobia.. How will it work  .... Will it ruin our game  ...Will everyone understand it ?

Over the years ,we've probably had doubts about a new rule and concerns about how it will effect our game. First, we need to understand a lot of discussion and possible testing gone into it, its not something scribbled on a cocktail napkin just before the innkeeper has issued 'last call' . Thinking back over some of my phobias, I believe these were the top two :

40 Second Clock...I feared the complexity would be hard to teach...It would be harder for the coaches to learn....The game clock operators would be totally confused. 

I found that ReadyRef, or such, made the transition for officials smooth; coaches were only interested in being weary of the BJ's 'poor-man's stopwatch' if on offense; the game clock operator was only interested in watching our signals.

In baseball, a mandatory pitch count came to town.....who keeps it  ...the scorekeepers (usually kids more interested in what their friends in the stands are doing)...they would check with each other each half-inning to see if they agreed ….IF they DIDN'T agree, the PLATE UMP would break the tie.

I found that it was now mostly adults counting pitches; between each half-inning we would hear : "Lefty's chucked 36", with the response : "Ayuh, 'spec so"

This is very true. I’ve discovered the worst fear of all is the fear of the unknown. I almost went nuts over the :40 change, and it was all because I had never “been that way before.”  Once I used it in a real game experience, I absolutely love it and do not want to ever go back to the “old way.”  These other modifications are the same way. It’s almost as if instant information is a bad thing. We all want to know what’s happening as it is happening, when in reality, waiting until we get the finished product may be the best course of action. I for one am thankful for KWH, Ralph, and others who toil on our behalf to help us officiate to the best or our abilities.

I can't recall a rule change that I feared.  I've thought some unnecessary or not worth the trouble to change it.

Thanks, Calhoun, for the kind words. Changes in all walks of our life can be stressful. An ole' Mainer saying :

"ONLY A BABY WITH A WET DIAPER LIKES A CHANGE"
