simulating the snap

question about about offensive line snapping up to simulate the snap. It has been called both ways this year by different crews.

Offense comes to the line, center puts his hand on the ball.  The other offensive lineman remain in a two point stance. The QB claps his hands all but the center  popup very quickly stand up look toward the sideline.

the entire time up until this point during the game  the guards were in a three point stance before the snap and the Tackles about 60% were in a 2 point stance before the snap. the team never looked toward the sideline  before  snapping  up. Also, the QB clapped his hand to receive  the snap all the time.

one crew said that the offensive was simulating the snap but if the Defensive was not drawn off there would be no call but if D jumped it would be a penalty on the O.

the crew last Friday said as long as their feet did not move it was legal.

can you help clarify.

Neither of those statements are true. The deciding factor is did they move quickly enough to make it look like a start. They can stand up as long as they do it slowly enough so as not to be mistaken for starting. As far as the guards in the three point stance , if any player on the line other than the player on the end places his hand on or near the ground and then lifts it, stands up, or shifts, it’s an automatic false start.

This definitely sounds like a false start.  Some crews will give you a "warning" on actions like this if the defense doesn't jump.  But if the defense jumps, definitely on the offense.

This pretty clearly sounds like a coached/planned action simulating the start of the play to induce the defense to encroach.  I'm on the side.
