I cheated once.... and lived to tell about it....
« on: March 14, 2023, 01:17:25 PM »
SCENE : Several years ago, American Legion baseball game
Trenton Acadians hosting Piscataguis Navigators (let's just call 'em 'Gators)

ACT I : Upon arrival ,we were greeted by a gentleman with a foreign accent, yelling : DE UMPIRES ARE HERE, LET'S ALL CHEER FOR DE UMPIRES !!!"
I soon found out he was an Israeli doctor working at a local hospital .. He had twins playing for the 'Gators- sibling (boy-girl) twins. Let's call them Joseph & Josephine  :).

ACT II : The 'Gators had but 11 players, the twins remained on their bench eagerly pounding their gloves in unison. :) :) .

ACT III : Top of the 9th, 'Gators trailing  16-0,  coach announced his pinch hitters : "Joseph will bat second, Josphine will bat third. :( "

ACT IV : Joseph swung wildly and struck out on 3 pitches.Teammates started packing their equipment. :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

ACT V : Little Josephine, dug in and bent over hoping to walk, frist pitch- "STR I K E   O N E", I YELLED .  :puke:

ACT VI : Josephine  looked back at me with fear in her eyes  pray:; :!# .I then had a flashback to several years prior, my kid sister had called with a delima. Her son, Avery, had
just returned from his little league game. "How did it go, Avery? " ,she inquired.  He burst into tears  :'( and said : " I made the last out  pi1eOn ". " How bad was that?",
she asked  ??? .I responded : "It doesn't  get much worse than that,Sis,...but a cure could be a trip to the Dairy Queen  :P !'.

ACT VII : Back to Trenton, I muttered to the catcher : "Unless she swings at it, catch, she's not going to strike out." He responded : "Fine with me, ump  :o !".
Next pitch was right down the middle,"BALL" I yelled. Pitcher scowled, catcher responded "Little low, Lefty"
Following pitch was the same. Catcher, giggled and said : "little high that time, Lefty  ;D " Lefty smiled  :D
Leftly just lobbed in the next two, I yelled : "BALL FOUR..TAKE YOUR BASE  yEs: "
Josephine yelled "WHEE.." and skiped down to first .Her teammates all started cheering her.. pHiNzuP pHiNzuP pHiNzuP pHiNzuP pHiNzuP pHiNzuP pHiNzuP

ACT VIII : I was thru with Josephine, but Lefty wasn't as he threw the ball 10 feet over the firstbaseman's head. Her teammates were screaming : "RUN, JOSEPHINE,RUN  !"
Her coach asked her to just stay at second. The new batter asked me if he got the same strike zone ,I said he might make the last out. He responded that he wanted to
make the last out. Swinging at a pitch around his eyes and popped to short. All the 'Gators rushed from their dugout, led by her dad , to greet Josephine. Her dad picked
her up and placed her on his shoulders, yelling : "HOW YOU HUSTLE...HOW YOU HUSTLE  :bOW !"

ACT IX :   A few weeks later, a Bangor Daily New reporter interviewed her. She said that on the plane ride over , she wanted to Americanize herself and read that baseball was
America's National Pastime. She knew that she would be playing softball in high school, but by playing on the American Legion team would help her to learn some of the
basics. The scribe then asked what the highlight of her season was ? She replied : "That was easy, IT WAS DOWN IN TRENTON WHEN I WALKED AND STOLE SECOND "

In my world, the love of my wife and son are the only things that matter. Other than that, though, about the best thing for me in my world is an "atta boy" from my fellow officials. Hope you feel the same way.

I asked ChatGPT (an AI, or Artificial Intelligence) system, and here is the response:

I'm sorry, but I do not have access to live sports statistics, and my training data only goes up until 2021. However, I can tell you that the record for the most career outs in Major League Baseball history is held by Pete Rose, who made 10,328 outs over the course of his career. It is unclear whether Rose also holds the record for the most "last outs" in a game specifically, as this is a very specific statistic that would require a significant amount of research to determine.

So... still have a ways to go... but, we will be there very, very soon.

The SABR  Baseball List & Record Book : Most game - ending outs ...Pete Rose 150,  for BoSox fans, Yaz was 6th with 131. Like I said, I BET someone would find the answer.  :)

With the many many baseball stats, someone can tell who made the last out on odd numbered Tuesdays...

Are you suggesting this WOKE nonsense may actually trace it's beginning far further back than we thought?  I guess we've always had some people who were eager to express really dumb ideas, but there didn't seem to be so many, otherwise rational people, so willing to buy immediately into the nonsense.

For Yankee Al  :): Further on down the line of making last outs are such Bronx notibles as Dave Winfield - 139. Greg Nettles - 128, and Reggie Jackson - 107.

We should also remember that Babe Ruth hit 714 home runs BUT struck out 1,330 times - a then MLB record...

Along came Mickey Mantle, who hit 536 home runs BUT struck out  1,710  times -breaking Babe's record.

Then long came Reggie Jackson, who hit 563 home runs BUT struck out 2,597 times - breaking Mickey's record. Reggie's record still stands.

Enough useless knowledge....

happy st. patrick's day !!

Happy St. Patrick's Day, back at you.  Seeing Ruth strike out was before my time, but watching Mantle, Jackson, Duke Snider and even that Williams guy, especially with men on base, late in  a close game, took your breath away.
