Taunting
« on: August 29, 2023, 08:21:54 AM »
B-2 taunts at 10 yard line as b-2 continues on to score a touchdown on the last play of the game making the score B-16 A-10. What is the call on this play?

Dead ball UNS. Can't enforce, unless you run a try. Then you can enforce it on the try.

It depends on which set of rules you’re using.

Under college rules, that’s a live-ball UNS.  Enforce from the 10 and extend the period.

I’m curious if there are any states that would run that try because the points might effect playoffs?

We've been instructed by our state that if the team wants to run the try, to let them...

Point differential is not used in NC so we're headed to the car.

We would write it up as an ejection post-game and submit to the state.  Taunting is one of the NCHSAA's 7 deadly sins.  B2 will be sitting out next week's game.

And cancel the score!

That's right! Unfortunately, NFHS does not cancel the score for UNS fouls. I wish they would match NCAA, at least in this regard.

That was on the docket several years ago but didn't make it to the floor for a final vote. the feeling was that taunting by the guy going for a TD isn't called enough now. If it became a live ball foul, it would reduce the number of calls even smaller. The exuberance or excitement of a kid going for a TD draws a fine line between that and taunting. :sTiR:

Of course, if the taunting was so excessive, or flagrant, it could rise to the level of USC.

Exactly right. Making the penalty more severe never results in the intended effect. HS officials are already awful by and large of flagging UNS - changing it to a live ball foul would just make it worse.

Same reason why too many basketball officials are scared to call a technical foul. Two shots and possession is "too severe" and it deters officials from penalizing unsporting behavior.

Part of our job is to understand the difference between , what we SEE as being UNS conduct & Personal Foul is a "Bright red line", but when that line is crossed - IT'S CROSSED.  NFHS; 2.16.C (Flagrant) helps describe that "red line" and ignoring that line can, and usually does, create far more problems.
