Liability Insurance Question

A two part "group umbrella liability insurance" question for sports official's boards.

1. Does your football executive board, or any other sports officiating executive board that you are a member of, carry a "blanket liability insurance" policy (ie: for just the leadership group)?

2.  Does your football board, or any other sports officiating board that you are a member of carry a "blanket liability insurance" policy (ie: for the entire board membership)?

We have this discussion every year and have difficulty finding what our organization's potential liabilities (as a group) might be from an official's board standpoint, and whether we should carry a blanket group liability policy.

I'm not an insurance agent nor do I play one on TV, nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, but it seems the State would have this coverage as part of your registration fees. If not, it seems NFHS would. If not, I woldn't think a policy like this would have premiums not too much to hurt the pocket.

PIAA got rid of our insurance, so there's that.

As a board, what could you possibly be liable for?  Officials are independent contractors.

Several years ago our exective board was threatened with a lawsuit by ONE OF OUR OWN for 'poor assignments'. While Maine law prevents a lawsuit against volunteers, technically we weren't volunteers as members of our exec. board have our dues waived. While I wasn't too worried some were. We got some sort of liablity insurance. It costs $500/year. Everyone's dues went up. Exec. board members still had their dues waived.

In this sue-happy world of ours, ya' never know what might come next... :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: (5-man crew)
