  • Hey ref, call it both ways.......
appendix A: Quiz Question #22  (Redding questions can have more than one correct answer, so choose all that apply)

On third down and 17, A2 drops back to pass and is sacked for a seven yard loss.  During the play linebacker B63 holds eligible receiver A84 10 yards beyond the neutral zone.

a. 15 yd penalty against B for fouling an eligible receiver beyond the neutral zone.
b. The penalty is enforced from the previous spot.
c. The penalty is enforced from the end of A2's run.
d. 10 yd penalty against B
e. Automatic first down for team A
f.  Third down and 7
g. None of the above

The answer in the book is c, d. "This is defensive holding on a running play: the penalty is from the end of the run and does not include an automatic first down.  Third and 14 for team A.  (9-2-3c, 10-4-4)

Shouldn't the penalty be enforced from the previous spot since the run ended behind the neutral zone?  This is the exception rule that began in 2023.  At first I was thinking Redding published before that rule came into effect, but no.  The rule change is cited in the front of the book.

Correct, this should be previous spot enforcement.
