S-B Quiz 2024-05
« on: August 02, 2024, 02:45:27 PM »
Check me.

1.   Free Kick @ A-35. A98’s free kick is caught at the goal line and B44 returns the kick to the B-25. Team A had 3 green dot helmets on the kickoff indicating that 3 Team A players on the field had receiving capability for coach-to-player communications.
RULING:
B, 1/10, B-30, snap (25).
Not more than one green dot helmet allowed per team, per down. Somewhat cryptically, the penalty is a live-ball 5-yard equipment violation, presumably at the previous spot, or at the spot where the dead-ball belongs to B. Assume the penalty is accepted at the spot where the dead-ball belongs to B.

2.   4/2 @ B-40. Team A QB A12 is in shotgun formation and the backup QB A10 is positioned as a wideout. A12 hands the ball to A44 and he gains 4 yards on the play. Both A12 and A10 have green dot helmets indicating that they have receiving capability for coach-to-player communications.
RULING:
A, 4/7, B-45, ready (25).
Not more than one green dot helmet allowed per team, per down. Somewhat cryptically, the penalty is a live-ball 5-yard equipment violation, presumably at the previous spot.

3.   3/10 @ A-25. A12 throws a legal forward pass, and receiver A88 first touches the pass when the ball is 1 ½ yards beyond the neutral zone. The receiver’s back foot is not beyond the neutral zone. A88 runs to the A-35 after the catch, and A77 was at the A-29 when A88 first touched the pass.
RULING:
A, 3/5, A-20, ready (25).
This is a foul for an ineligible downfield, 5-yard penalty at the previous spot and repeat the down. The BALL did cross the NZ. The location of ball, and not the locations of receiver’s feet, is the governing criterion.

4.   4/Goal @ B-5. A55’s legal snap is muffed by A12 and A21 recovers at the B-7 and advances the ball into the end zone.
RULING:
A, try, B-3, no game clock (40 & running). There is no rule prohibiting the recovery or advance of a muffed snap by any player. All action is legal, and the down results in a touchdown.

5.   3/10 @ B-40. A81 catches A12’s forward pass at the B-35 and fumbles at the B-31. The fumble is recovered by grounded A84 five yards in advance of the fumble. Just after releasing the pass, A12 was roughed by B54.
RULING:
A, 1/10, B-13, ready (25).
A84’s recovery of the fumble is legal. B54 committed a roughing the passer foul, and the penalty is enforced from the end of the last run (A84’s run).

6.   3/Goal @ B-6. During the second possession series of the first extra period with the score tied, Team A decides to attempt a field goal on 3rd down. The field goal attempt is blocked, and the ball does not cross the neutral zone. A23 recovers the ball at the B-10, runs and is tackled at the B-3.
RULING:
A, 4/G, B-3, no game clock (40 & running).
The ball did cross the neutral zone, and there was no change of team possession during the down, so A23’s recovery and advance is legal, and play continues with the next down (4th down).

7.   2/10 @ B-15. Time expires in the first half on a play in which A12 is completely beyond the neutral zone at the B-13 when he throws and completes a pass to A88 in Team B’s end zone.
RULING:
A, 3/13, B-18, snap (25).
Illegal forward pass (thrown from beyond the NZ), 5-yard penalty from the spot of the pass with LOD.

8.   3/5 @ B-15. Late in the fourth quarter, with Team A trailing 20-17, Quarterback A10 rolls out and is at the B-12 when he throws a forward pass that is incomplete. When the ball is dead the game clock shows 0:13.
RULING:
A, 4/7, B-17, 0:03 (4), ready (25).
Illegal forward pass (thrown from beyond the NZ), 5-yard penalty from the spot of the pass with LOD. A 10-second subtraction applies, and Team B will accept the subtraction, setting the game clock to 0:03, and the game clock will start on the ready.

Of course. I got tunnel vision by other LOD discussions. In this case, B would opt to allow the period to expire.

1. RULING: B, 1/10, B-25, Snap.
On free kick plays, the coach-to-player communications rule will not be in effect. There is no limitation to the number of green dot helmets for either team during free kick plays. Rule 1-4-11-b Exception was recently updated to add the free kick language (see the updated online version of the Rules Book).

3. 3/15*

6. It's a legal kick down, so the play clock would be set to 25 (3-2-4-c-8).

So we now know. I would have thought this would have been immediately publicized through RefQuest when it happened.

That would have been good.

The original electronic version of the book was ‘updated’ for that one item. I am out of town and don’t have access to my hard copy of the book issued by the NCAA/CFO, so I don’t know if the hard copy version has this ‘update.’ I’’ll check when I get home.

OK, my FBS sources tell me that the green dot exemption on Free Kicks is the only thing added/changed in the 'updated' version. The hard copy rule book I got through my 'association' does not contain this 'update.' OK, so issue a bulletin to notify the world of this update. Hiding it in a quiz is a bit un-transparent.
