Long Field Goal Mechanics - maybe I'm crazy?
« on: August 28, 2024, 09:23:15 AM »
For some reason, I have it in my head that there is, or used to be, a point/yardage/distance at which you no longer sent a side judge back on field goal attempts.  I was under the impression, for example, the LOS is the 36 and K is attempting a field goal.  At this distance, R lines up directly in line with the spot where the holder will place the ball and the uprights.  No side judge goes back, and instead the BJ is only responsible for determining if the ball cleared the crossbar and R is responsible for determining if the ball went between the posts.

Is this still a mechanic, was it ever a mechanic, or C) did I dream this, firmly embedding it into my pea-sized brain.  I've been calling for 30 years now, things are starting to run together.

Another possibility is, my mentor came up with that on his own!?  He was a dandy.  5 years with him set me back 15 years!  ;D ;D ;D

Are you talking 7-man mechanics?

Yeah, that’s the first question to answer. A true Side Judge (S) never rules on a field goal attempt. In a crew of 7, the B and F rule on all field goal attempts (regular scrimmage and tries). In a crew of 6 (if that is ever used any more), there isn’t a Side Judge, but the B and F rule on all field goal attempts, also.

Crews of five, the B and L have all field goal attempts (regular scrimmage and tries).

In crews of four, when the succeeding spot is inside the B-15, the R is responsible for ruling on the success/failure of the attempt between the uprights (from a position in line through the spot of the kick through the goal) and the L rules on success/failure of the attempt above the crossbar (from a position to the side of the goal, 1/2 step into the end zone). On/outside the B-15, the L has everything.

For crews of three, substitute the U for the L in the description for crews of 4 above.
Good luck.

When I started out (4 man), we had the L on the GL (Long FG) or EL (short FG or try) & he ruled over/under the crossbar.  The R ruled between the uprights. H had kicker & holder for roughing.

In 7 man, we have the S on the GL always, and B & F under the pipes.

Would love to work a 7 man crew! Only time we get that is top level state championship games. We're luck to get a few 6 man crews during season, most the time is 5 man  :-\

I recently moved from Nebraska to Michigan...its different.

Mechanics...check local listings.

In Michigan, crew of 5, U & B are under the goal posts - distance doesn't matter.

Every where has their own mechanics, we've always had B and U under but if the kid is outside the 20 its B by himself.

That's typically what we do with our 5-man mechanics.

The proper term is "wing" official or "short wing" if you want to be more specific. Side judge is the deep wing on the same sideline as the head linesman in a crew of 6 or 7.

MD uses 6 officials for varsity games, so in those games, F and S would be under the posts for all field goal attempts.

In 5-official games in my prior association, U and B would be under the posts. For games with 7 officials, F and B would be under the posts, with S watching the line of scrimmage together with the U.

In my current association, B and H would be under the posts together in games where we have to use a crew of 5. In another association, L would go under the posts with the B. In games with 5 officials, it is all variable, but I would not have B under the posts alone.
