Just got an email from supervisor. A memo will be coming out today from NCAA to address this change:
"If a player injury occurs on a play where there is a temporary stoppage of the clock for a first down, and the clock is stopped with 10 seconds or less remaining in the 2nd or 4th quarters, the opponent has the option of a 10-second runoff. The 10-second runoff may be avoided by the use of a charged team timeout if available.”
I wonder what prompted that? The injury team can’t predict that a first down will be made before the ball is dead, and if a first down is made, there isn’t as much incentive to stop the clock. But, I suppose Team A could fake the injury, in the hope that they will make the first down, so the clock is stopped for the first down, that would, previously, have stopped the clock with no penalty, and they could get their field goal team on the field, and ready to go. Now, they’d better have a T/O remaining if they try to fake an injury under these circumstances.
