Formation and Shift Question
« on: September 08, 2024, 07:15:55 AM »
Not being a NCAA official my question is. Can after the ready with the snappers hand on the ball a covered up player(#85) who is in a three point stance lift his hand and shift legally? This must be a little different than NFHS if legal.

  • The rules are there if you need them.

In NCAA football, it is a false start when an INELIGIBLE lineman of Team A lifts one hand, or both hands, after having placed one, or both, below the knee (a hand(s) dangling below the knee while the forearm is resting on the knee does not count). A 'covered' lineman, regardless of number, is ineligible. Any player (lineman or back) wearing a number 50-79 is ineligible, regardless of his position, and cannot become eligible until a legal forward pass has been touched by Team B (or an official). And, remember, eligibility only applies to legal forward passes.

In the SC vs U of K yesterday #85 was a tight end clearly covered up by the wideout in a 3pt stance shifted to the backfield. SC's defensive end pointed when he did this but no flag was thrown.

Sometimes I know I forget pre-snap to pay attention to who's in 3 point stances, then shifts catch you by surprise.  This is probably what happened.  I know that's something I need to add to my pre-snap checklist.
