Think thru penalty enforcement
« on: September 28, 2024, 06:48:44 AM »
Last night we had one that was a little complex....

(1) Home team's ball 4/goal from visitor's 3 w/ 0:06 in half.
(2) Scrambling QB drills a pass into ground @ B's 10
(3)  ^flag IG, time expires.
(4) Players head off, visitor's coach sez: "We don't want it",band enters field...it was homecoming.
(5) As we  z^ z^ z^ z^ z^ ploded to our halftime hideway, my brain woke up.
(6) IG= LOD,accepted live ball penalty w/ 0:00 = untimed down= B has one play @ their 15. hEaDbAnG

EPILOGUE : My crewmates tried to convince me B wouldn't want one play from their 15 yEs: yEs: yEs: yEs:.
The visitors won 34-9....and the band played on...

WHOOPS, AFTER MY POST AND A CUP OF COFFEE, i REALIZED THAT YOU CAN'T HAVE AN UNTIMED DOWN ON A LOD PENALTY...I GOT IT RIGHT AFTER ALL tR:oLl...EVEN A BROKEN CLOCK IS RIGHT TWICE A DAY!!! cRaZy/color]

But your Subject line highlights the most important thing.  Too often we want to hurry things along and don't think it through and, as a result, can end up missing important details.
Another point that comes to mind out of your situation.  Always encourage your guys to speak up and voice their opinion.  Doesn't matter if it's wrong 99 times out of 100.  It still makes us all think and that 1 out of 100 can turn into a crew saver.

This might be one of the hardest things to teach inexperienced officials.

Visitors coach wanted to decline, thinking A would get to replay the down after penalty enforcement?   He was wrong twice..... (loss of down and it was 4th + no untimed down for IG).
