Newbie here trying to understand the Illegal Participation foul and its enforcement.
I think this is a foul when the player goes OOB on his own and then returns back inbounds. It is not a foul when the player goes OOB but it is a foul when he returns back inbounds.
I know this is a 15-yard penalty. However, is the penalty yards marked off from the previous spot (LOS) or the spot where the player came back inbounds. What is the reasoning for the enforcement spot.
What is the rule on this type of penalty so I can make sure I look it up in the book.
You are correct on when you should call the foul.
Easiest way to do this is with the old all-but one.
1) Classify the play - run or loose ball play?
2) Determine the basic spot for said run or loose ball play.
3) Where is the foul in relation to the basic spot and by who?
4) Enforce with all but one...
5) ...unless it's a previous spot exception (which this isn't).
So if we have a pass play (since this is often when we'd call it)
1) Loose ball play
2) Basic spot is the previous spot
3) Foul is by the offense BEYOND the basic spot. (I'm assuming this happens way down field)
4) Fouls by the offense beyond are enforced from the basic spot.
5) (N/A)
So you would go 15 from the previous spot.
If it ended up being a run play, you'd go from the end of the run, unless the end of the run goes past your flag, then you'd go from the flag.
