Multiple USC after TD - Enforcement
« on: October 07, 2024, 09:24:00 AM »
If A scores a TD and after the TD two separate A players are flagged for celebrations because they gave the sword and/or gun gesture.

My question is....
Can one penalty be enforced on the PAT and one be enforced on the KO.
Or
Do both unsportsmanlike penalties need to be enforce on either the PAT or TD and no splitting them up.

I looked in the book and I can't seem to find anything on this.

Thanks in advance...

Was it a coordinated celebration where they did it together/simultaneously?   You might treat that as one act/ one UNS instead of two individual UNS.

But to answer your question, you can't split them according to my state mechanics manual, but others say you can.  (edited)

Thanks for your reply....

It was two separate acts, at two different spots in the EZ, and the fouls were called by two separate officials.

Gotcha...   Well, it will either be a try from the 33 or kickoff from the 12 1/2 if I'm not mistaken.

Thanks for your reply. I wasn't sure and I couldn't find anything in the book, to support how to handle this, either way.

We need others to answer your OP question.  I'm looking around at old posts and other sites and find some saying you can split them.  I don't see anything in the rules, but our state mechanics manual says you can't split them.

I might be telling you wrong info for your state.  Sorry for confusion, but it's a nice discussion nonetheless.

Here's the source for my state:  (Case play 2, bottom of pg. 28)

Gotcha... no worries at all. I will wait to see if others weigh in and what they say.

I am from PA and we use the NFHS rules.

I believe that under NFHS rules that these fouls must be administered separately and in order of occurrence.  I find nothing in the rules that prohibits these from being "split" with one on the try and one on the kick-off.  These are DB fouls that are administered in order of occurrence.  Each foul has its own options.

Thanks for your reply NVFOA...

That is what I read as well. I did not see anywhere that they say, the penalties have to be enforced together.

Our association tries if at all possible to consider such things one act.

But what you're describing sounds to me like 30 yards on your umpire's FitBit.

The applicable rules are: NFHS 8-2-5 & 10-2-5a

The applicable CASEBOOK play is: 8.2.2 SITUATION D

I CAN'T find anywhere in our beloved Rule 10 or Rule 8 that you CAN'T penalize one on PAT and one on KO. I assume that therefore you CAN. IF it was just one happy celebration, I would have only one USC and only charge one USC (double-secret probation) on Mr. Touchdown, as he was probably the ring-master.

I agree completely. What is not specifically prohibited in the rules is allowable.

Agreed.  No need to be officious.  15 yards and move on.
