Down of the moment

Down of the moment, because I may not be through for the day! 😀

On a beautiful, clear, crisp fall day somewhere in mid-America,  2/8, B-28, 0:03 (4), A=14, B=24.

A12’s legal forward pass is caught by end A88 at the B-20, and A88 jukes and jives and reverses and stiff arms defenders and, with every ounce of effort remaining in his body and soul, advances to the B-1 where B99 cuts A88’s feet from underneath him, and, as time in the period expires, A88 falls with the ball squarely on the goal line before any of his body parts touch the ground (of which several do touch the ground instantly thereafter). With the Back Judge and Field Judge majestically signaling “touchdown,” A88 rises from the ground, hands the ball to the Back Judge and says “Thank you for being here, today, and for all you do to serve this sport, sir.” He then looks into the grandstands to acknowledge the thousands of adoring and screaming fans. A88 waves and blows kisses to the crowd as he moves toward his bench area. Momentarily afterward, both teams begin to send in their special teams units for the try.

Ruling:

My ruling is that I don't have one, because I'm already headed to the locker room, game's over.

8-3-2-a  The ball shall be put in play by the team that scored a six-point touchdown. If a touchdown is scored during a down in which time in the fourth period expires, the try shall not be attempted unless the point(s) would affect the outcome of the game.

Ruling: The referee should make the announcement, "Since the result of the try would not affect the outcome of the game, by rule, the game is over." Then hold the ball overhead, then toss it to the ball person, and go home (or wherever you routinely go following a game).

2009, San Diego State @ Air Force, SDSU up by 9 points, when Air Force scored a TD as times expires in the 4th period. No flags. I pause momentarily to process what has occurred, and realize, the try won't affect the outcome of the game, so, I held the ball overhead and we all walked off the field toward the dressing room. The crowd seemed mystified. First (and still only) time in my career I'd had that, so I didn't think to make an announcement. That would have helped (maybe). BTW, the stuff about A88 juking/jiving, etc., is fictional. But, it sounds good, eh?

Now let’s think about if the answer if this question was posted on the Texas forum instead of NCAA…

I do wonder how this rule affects Conference tiebreakers, considering the SEC still has a points factor in its procedures.

I will pose the question over there.
