S-B Quiz 11

Quiz 11
Check me, check me, check me.

1. 3/Goal @ B-5. The offense substitutes in their backup QB, A7 and he lines up in the backfield with A12 who is the starting QB. The ball is snapped to A12, he fakes to A7 and then throws a pass to A88 who is in the end zone and makes the catch. The CJ notices that both A12 and A7 are wearing green dot helmets.
RULING:
A, 3/G, B-10, snap (25).
Live-ball foul for illegal equipment, charged to A7. The apparent score is canceled, and the 5-yard penalty is enforced at the previous spot, with the down repeated.

2. Free Kick @ A-35. Team A and Team B line up in position and the Referee signals the ball ready for play. Team A has multiple green dot helmets on the field signifying that those players have radio receiving capability. The high short kick is fair caught by B21 at the B-23.
RULING:
B, 1/10, B-25, snap (40 and running).
There is no restriction on the number of helmets equipped with coach-to-player communications during a free kick down. All legal action, and B21’s fair catch of the ball inside the B-25 entitles Team B to put the ball in play at the B-25 for the next scrimmage series.

3. 4/10 @ 50. A98 punts and the kick is untouched beyond the neutral zone when A88 reaches across Team B’s goal line and bats the ball back into the field of play. B22 recovers at the B-2 and advances to the B-12 where A66 tackles him by pulling his facemask.
RULING:
B, 1/10, B-27, snap (25).
Team B will accept the 15-yard penalty for the facemask foul, which is enforced from the end of B22’s run. The illegal touching violation would result in Team B putting the ball in play at the B-25, which is less advantageous than the penalty, so Team B will accept the penalty.

4. 4/15 @ A-18. A98's punt is illegally touched by A47 at the A-48. B7 bats the loose ball forward from the 50 to the A-43 where A39 falls on it.
RULING:
B, 1/10, B-40, snap (25).
A, 4/5, A-28, snap (25).
Team A must accept the penalty for the illegal batting of the ball by B7, because, otherwise, Team B would invoke the illegal touching privilege to get a scrimmage series at the spot of A47’s illegal touching violation. The illegal touching privilege is canceled when Team A accepts the 10-yard penalty for the illegal batting foul, enforced from the spot of the foul (50), which takes the ball to the B-40. enforced at the previous spot, with 4th down repeated.

5. 1/10 @ 50. A12 throws a pass to A88 at the B-30 who makes the catch while grounded. Ineligible lineman A70 runs more than three yards beyond the neutral zone and does not make contact with an opponent. He circles toward the flank and returns back across the neutral zone before A12’s pass.
RULING:
A, 1/15, A-45, ready (25).
A70 commits a foul for ineligible downfield during a down with a legal forward pass that crosses the neutral zone. The 5-yard penalty is enforced from the previous spot, and the down is repeated.

6. 1/10 @ A-25. Defender B21 is in press coverage, and at the snap strikes wideout A88 in the face mask at the line of scrimmage. A88 is initially disrupted from running the route. QB A12 is sacked for a 7-yard loss.
RULING:
A, 1/10, A-40, ready (25).
B21 commits a personal foul for striking an opponent in the facemask. The 15-yard penalty is enforced at the previous spot, with a first down. By the description, this does not sound like a flagrant action by B21, so there is no ejection.

7. 1/10 @ B-30. After the Two-Minute Timeout in the second quarter, quarterback A10, who has not been outside the tackle box, throws a desperation pass from the B-35 that falls incomplete after ineligible A58 touches the ball at the B-30 in an attempt to catch it. There was no eligible receiver in the area. The clock shows 1:01 after the play.
RULING:
A, 2/20 15, B-40 B-35, 0:51 (2) ready (25).
A10 commits a foul for intentional grounding. The 5-yard penalty is enforced from the spot of the foul, and include a The penalty is loss of down at the spot of the pass. Because the foul stopped the game clock with less than 2-minutes in the 2nd period, a 10-second subtraction from the game clock is available to Team B. Assuming the 10SS is accepted, the game clock will start on the referee’s signal.

8. 2/10 @ B-40. Late in the game, A22 runs for 8 yards and is tackled short of the line to gain. The game clock reads 1:58 when A22 is downed. B54’s helmet came off (not a direct result of a foul) during the play. Play clock?
RULING:
A, 3/2, B-42, 1:48 (4), snap (40, on referee’s signal).
Actually, unless I am missing something, insufficient information. Score? Status of remaining times-out for Team B? If Team A is ahead in score, they may choose to accept a 10-second subtraction from the game clock, and the game clock would start on the referee’s signal, and B54 would not be able to participate in the next down. If Team B has a team timeout available, they can avoid the 10SS, and keep B54 in the game, by taking a T/O. If Team A is behind in score, they might decline the 10SS and have the game clock start on the snap. In that case, B54 would not be allowed to participate in the next down, unless Team B takes a charged team time out.[/color]
Corrections:
A, 3/2, B-32, snap (25).
Because of the 2024 Two-Minute Timeout, there is no option for a 10-second subtraction for B54 losing his helmet, but he may not participate in the next down, unless Team B is granted a charged team time out.

7. 2/15, B-35, RFP, 25. 0:51 on game clock. ING. Loss of down at the spot of the foul.

8. Play clock set to 25 following the TMT.

7. Geez. What the heck was I thinking? I’ll fix that.

8. If B takes a T/O, yeah, 25 on the play clock. But, we don’t know the score and what A will elect, and we don’t know if B has a t/o remaining, or, if they do, if they will use it.

Thanks.

The question doesn’t explicitly state that the play started before 2 minutes, but it heavily implies that.  8 yd running gain and the clock is now at 1:58.

So if we accept that’s what they meant, we now have the 2 minute timeout at 1:58.  No runoff possible and a 25 sec play clock.

Forgive me. Forgot about bona fide NCAA game two-minute time out. Haven’t had that here in Texas, since we don’t do that. So, yes, no 10SS, and play clock to 25.

Number 4: The penalty for illegal batting would be enforced at the previous spot. The foul was committed by the team not in possession, which means basic spot enforcement. PSK doesn’t apply because Team A is in legal possession at the end of the down. Team A can choose a 10 yard penalty at the previous spot and have 4/5 @ A-28, or decline the penalty and Team B will have the ball at the A-48 because of the illegal touching.

Yep. And the loss of down component is not applicable because the foul occurred when a legal scrimmage kick was beyond the NZ. More good corrections to my horribly botched answers. Thank you.
