Forward Progress Call or Not?
« on: November 09, 2024, 08:11:08 AM »
What will be the game clock status for each of these "forward progress" type plays along the sideline where the ball carrier ends up out of bounds?

1.  Ball carrier A22 is shoved at the sideline by B56 at the B-25 and ends up OB at the B-24

2.  Ball carrier A22 is shoved at the sideline by B56 at the B-25 and ends up OB at the B-26

3.  Ball carrier A22 is shoved at the sideline by B56 at the B-25 and ends up OB at the B-25

It's easy to get the players, getting 'em to play together, that's the hard part. - Casey Stengel

Since he was not wrapped up and controlled, I’d go with “snap” in all three cases.

1) Snap
2) Ready
3) By rule, ready.  In practice, depends on game situation.  I'd definitely go on the snap if this was time critical as he was not clearly driven backwards OOB.

If I'm understanding #2 correctly, B's Forward Progress (advancement) was ended at the B-25, Inbounds. Whistle stops the play (inbounds) clock continues to run, unless the play earned a 1st down for A, or ended A's series of downs short of the LTG.  In 1 & 3, the spot, at which the  BALL's forward progress,  in player possession, when the player touched OOB determines subsequent spot.

As long as it is clear that the contact stopped forward progress and resulted in the player going out of bounds, in 1 and 3 the clock continues to run. The clock stops for 2.

In 1 and 3 the runner's forward progress was stopped in bounds. If you spot the ball there, you're saying the play ended in bounds. In 2, you'd spot the ball at the out of bounds spot, the 26, since forward progress was not stopped in bounds, therefore the ball became dead when the runner went out of bounds.

If you take bama's "He wasn't wrapped up" approach, then you best be putting the ball at the 24 in scenario 1. If the runner clearly disengages and deliberately runs backwards out of bounds, then the "forward progress" spot is irrelevant. He went out of bounds at the 24, spot the ball there, clock on the snap.
