S-B 2025 Quiz No. 6
Pretty confident on these, too.

1. 2/7 @ A-25. Team A is ahead in the score late in the fourth quarter and after the Two-Minute Timeout. When ball carrier A22 is tackled in the field of play, the game clock reads 1:35. The umpire reports to the referee that he has a flag for holding by snapper A55 at the A-30. On the play, A22 gained three yards.
RULING:
A, 2/14, A-18, snap (25).
The penalty for the holding foul is penalized at the Basic Spot (end of A22’s run), and the down is repeated. For fouls by the team ahead in score after the 2-minute time out, the offended team (Team B, in this case) has the option to start the game clock on the snap, which they will accept.

2. 2/7 @ A-25. Team A is ahead in the score late in the fourth quarter and after the Two-Minute Timeout. When ball carrier A22 is tackled in the field of play, the game clock reads 1:35. The umpire reports to the referee that he has a flag for holding by snapper A55 at the A-30. On the play, A22 gained nine yards.
RULING:
A, 2/10, A-22, snap (25).
The penalty for the holding foul is penalized at the spot of the foul, and the down is repeated. For fouls by the team ahead in score after the 2-minute time out, the offended team (Team B, in this case) has the option to start the game clock on the snap, which they will accept. (Note: This AR confirms that the offended team may elect to have the clock start on the ready or the snap, even though there was another reason that the clock stopped.)

3. 2/10 @ B-30. Late in the 4th quarter, the game clock is running, Team A trails in the score, and both teams are out of timeouts. Guard A66 in a three-point stance misses the snap count and lurches forward, committing a false start. B77 then commits a dead-ball personal foul. The game clock is stopped with 8 seconds remaining in the game.
RULING:
Game over.
The foul by Team A causes the game clock to stop immediately. The foul by Team B does not offset the foul by Team A, so the foul by Team A qualifies for a 10-second subtraction, which will be accepted by Team B, ending the game. B77 gets away with a foul, although the conference office could review this action take punitive action, if justified.

4. 2/5 @ B-20. The game clock is running late in the 4th quarter. B77 is in the neutral zone at the snap but does not make contact. QB A12 rolls out to pass, runs to the B-17, and throws a forward pass which falls incomplete. The game clock reads 0:15.
RULING:
2/5, B-20, 0:15 (4), snap (25).
B77 commits a live-ball offside foul, and A12 commits a live-ball illegal pass to conserve time. The opposing fouls offset, and the down is repeated. Because of the offsetting fouls, there is no option for a 10-second subtraction. The game clock starts on the snap, due to the incomplete pass.

5. 4/7 @ A-35. Team A punts and at the snap has five players in the backfield. The kick is partially blocked behind the neutral zone and subsequently goes out of bounds at the A-45.
RULING:
A, 4/12, A-30, snap (25), OR B, 1/10, A-45, snap (25).
Team A commits an illegal formation foul BEFORE the kick, so it can only be penalized at the previous spot, and the down repeated, OR, the penalty can be declined, and Team B can put the ball in play, 1/0, at the spot where the ball became dead (A-45).

6. 4/15 @ A-5. Punter A88 from Team A’s end zone kicks the ball. Tackle A77 is flagged for holding in the end zone. B21 catches the kick at the 50 and returns the ball to the B-30.
RULING:
A, free kick, A-20, free kick timing (25), OR B, 1/10, B-40, snap (25).
At Team B’s option, A77’s holding foul can result in a safety (2-points for B), with a free kick from the A-20 to follow, OR, Team B can elect to penalize A77’s holding foul at the spot where the dead-ball belongs to Team B (B-30), and putting the ball in play at the spot where the penalty leaves the ball (B-40).

7. Free Kick @ A-35. Kicker A91 kicks a high, short kick and B44 is in position to catch the kick at the B-35. A21 covering the kick catches the free kick very near receiver B44, thus preventing him from making the catch. A21 is downed at the B-30.
RULING:
B, 1/10, 50, snap (25).
A21 commits a foul for kick catch interference (the spot of the foul presumed to be the B-35), which is penalized 15 yards from the spot of the foul, taking the ball to the 50, where Team B will put the ball in play, 1/10.

8. 4/10 @ 50. B17 is at the B-20 and in position to catch Team A’s high scrimmage kick. During the downward flight of the ball, A37 contacts B17 viciously and flagrantly before he touches the ball. A37 did not alter his speed or make any attempt to elude B17. The untouched kick rolls out of bounds at the B-10.
RULING:
B, 1/10, B-35, snap (25). A37 is ejected from the game.
A37 commits a foul for kick catch interference, which is also a flagrant personal foul. The 15-yard penalty is enforced from the spot of the foul, taking the ball to the B-35, where Team B will put the ball in play, 1/10. Because the foul was flagrant, A37 is ejected from the game (and must be escorted from the field play, and remain out of view of the field of play and under team supervision for the remainder of the game.

For 5, the tack-on option is available since tack-on applies during a scrimmage kick play with punts that cross the neutral zone, and a scrimmage kick play starts at the snap.

B, 1/10 A-40 snap (25).

2. 2/12 @ A-20, 25, snap. Enforce from the spot of the foul (30).

5. This can be tacked on since the kick crossed the LOS.

Yep. Momentarily confused this with Team B fouls that occur before the kick is made, which can only be penalized at the previous spot; after the kick, they can qualify for PSK.
Thanks.

On number one, don’t forget that 3rd and 4 is an option. And if Team B chooses that, they can still hold the clock until the snap even am after declining the penalty. With 1:35 left, maybe not. But with :55 left, giving Team A 2nd down again essentially ends the game.

Yeah, I considered that, but I just couldn’t imagine Team B accepting that. But, those are decisions coaches are paid to make and live with, so we’d definitely let him make that choice.

In 6, Wouldn't  the next snap be from the B-20?

The foul was by Team A, so the penalty, from the B-30, would move the ball toward Team A's goal line, to the B-40.

I believe you are correct (kind of) and the question was written incorrectly and meant to say A-30. Hard to believe he would catch the ball at the 50 and “return” the ball for a 20 yard loss to the B-30. Should be 1/10 @ A-20 or safety F/K @ A-20.

Yeah, I misread the question, horribly. All I saw was the (printed) end of the run, and didn’t realize the ball had been caught at the 50. While my ruling was, technically, correct - for the printed question - I am also sure (now) the question was written wrong. If the ball was actually returned to the A-30, then yes, Team B would next put the ball in play at the A-20 (following the 10-yard penalty).

And it will be interesting to see if S-B acknowledges the error.

6. Well, they didn't acknowledge the error, and they gave an incorrect answer. There is no way to get to the B-20, with the given circumstances. Back in the 60's, when computers were first becoming a thing, in programming classes, we'd often hear the expression, "Garbage in, garbage out." This is a classic case of garbage in, garbage out.
I find it hard to believe either/both Shaw or Blandino are actually authoring these questions. I wonder who is actually writing these things.
