loose ball that hits the official
« on: August 19, 2025, 08:53:28 AM »
Hi
Can someone guide me to the rule that pertains to a loose ball that hits an official in these situation?
I am not seeing what I need and must be looking in the wrong part of the rule book.

Passer throws the ball in that the first person to contact the pass is an official.

Passer throws ball that is touched by a player, then an official and then caught by a player.

Runner fumbles ball that then touches an official.

Thanks

Rule 2 is always a good place to start.
Rule 2-1-3 and 2-29-3 tell you what you need to know.
In regards to your scenarios ---  An official is nothing if in the field of play.  A piece of dirt if out of bounds.

An official in the field of play is treated no different than any of the 22 players on the field if a loose ball hits him/her.  The ball remains live and in play.
It's easy to get the players, getting 'em to play together, that's the hard part. - Casey Stengel

Somewhere (maybe a dream) I saw a video of a PAT kick that was a 'low liner' deflect off the ump's  sNiCkErS shoulder's and thru the pipes  ^TD

Thanks, 'Rif, that took the ump's hat off  :o. We of ice-hockey interest could call that a 'hat trick' with an assist credited to the ump  sNiCkErS  tiphat:
