2025 SB Quiz Week 1
« on: August 28, 2025, 08:49:52 PM »
Took a week off last week. Check me on this one.
-------------------------------------------------------

1. Free Kick @ A-35. A91’s kick is angled toward the pylon and bounces high at the B-5. After the ball has bounced, the return man, B21, gives a fair catch signal by extending one hand above his head and waving that hand from side to side more than once. B21 then receives the high bounce just inbounds at the B-1, and the officials properly kill the play.
RULING:
B, 1/10, B-1, snap (40 and running).
B21’s signal after the ball has touched the ground is an invalid signal, and the ball is dead when recovered by B21, and belongs to Team B at that spot.

2. Free Kick @ A-35. A91’s kick is angled toward the pylon and bounces high at the B-5. After the ball has bounced, the return man, B21, gives a fair catch signal by extending one hand above his head and waving that hand from side to side more than once. B21 then receives the high bounce with his right foot out of bounds and his left foot inbounds at the B-1. The officials properly kill the play.
RULING:
B, 1/10, B-35, snap (25), OR A, kickoff, A-30, free kick timing (25).
B21 is out of bounds when the free kicked ball touches him (when he recovered the ball), and thus, is a foul for an illegal kick out of bounds by Team A. Team B will most likely take the ball 30-yards from the previous spot. Alternatively, Team B could have the 5-yard penalty enforced at the previous spot, and the kickoff repeated.

3. 3/10 @ A-25. Team A lines up with wideout A80 covering up Tight End A88 at the snap. Both receivers release downfield, and QB A12 throws to A88. Defensive back, B21, makes early contact and plays through the back of A88 at the A-45 before the catchable ball arrives and the BJ puts the marker down. The pass falls incomplete.
RULING:
A, 4/10, A-25, snap (25), OR, A, 3/15, A-20, snap (25).
Incomplete information. We are not told if A88 touches the forward pass, which would make a difference on the next down and distance.
On the assumption that he did NOT touch the ball, ineligible A88 commits a foul for an ineligible downfield during a legal forward pass that crosses the NZ. Because A88 is ineligible, the Back Judge should be advised, and he should rescind his apparent pass interference call (since pass interference does not apply to ineligible players). Team B will most likely decline the penalty for the ineligible downfield, to advance to 4th down at the previous spot. However, they may elect to accept the 5-yard penalty at the previous spot, with 3rd down repeated.

4. 4/10 @ A-30. A91’s punt lands at the B-30 and is recovered by A80 at the B-25. After the ball landed at the B-30 and before the recovery by A80, the ball bounced forward to the B-28 and tipped receiver B21’s towel.
RULING:
A, 1/10, B-25, snap (25).
When the kicked ball touched B21’s towel, that is legal touching of the ball by Team B, which allows Team A to legally recover the ball thereafter. A80’s recovery is legal, and Team A is awarded a new scrimmage series at the B-25.

5. 3/1 @ B-40. Midway through the 2nd quarter, Team A is in position at the line with the game clock running. Before the snap, QB A12 yells “move” as a part of his offensive signals. B75 jumps into the neutral zone and contacts A67.
RULING:
A, 3/6, B-45, ready (25).
By rule, the word “move” is reserved for use exclusively by Team B as a defensive pre-snap signal. A12 commits a foul for delay of game by using that word in his offensive pre-snap signals. (Note that a reaction by Team B is not required for this to be a foul.)

6. 3/10 @ B-25. There are 15 seconds remaining in the 4th quarter and the score is A-17, B-20. No timeouts remaining for either team. Under pressure and while still in the tackle box at the B-35, A16 throws an incomplete pass which lands just beyond the neutral zone in an area where there are no eligible receivers with 0:10 remaining. B98 lost his helmet at the line of scrimmage during the play.
RULING:
Game over.
A16 commits a foul for an illegal forward pass (intentional grounding), which stops the game clock. After the 2-minute time out, this foul qualifies for a 10-second subtraction, which Team B will obviously accept (and Team A can not avoid, because they have no available time out). The helmet coming off of B98 is of no consequence, since the game is over.

7. Free Kick @ A-35. Team A executes an on-side kick. A33 is running near the sideline and steps out of bounds at the A-45. At the A-47 he leaps from out of bounds and bats the ball forward, and it rolls out of bounds at the A-49.
RULING:
B, 1/10, A-42, snap (25).
A33 is out of bounds when the free kicked ball touches him (when he bats the ball), and becomes dead immediately, and is a foul by Team A for an illegal kick out of bounds. Team B will most likely accept the 5-yard penalty at the dead-ball spot, and will be awarded a scrimmage series at that spot. (Alternatively, but not likely, Team B could accept the five yard penalty at the previous spot, and repeat the kickoff.)

8. 3/4 @ B-30. Midway through the 3rd quarter, ball carrier A22 goes out of bounds at the B-18. B78 commits a personal foul immediately after the ball is out of bounds.
RULING:
A, 1/G, B-9, ready (25).
B78’s dead-ball UNR is penalized ˝ the distance to the goal from the dead-ball spot, with a first down. The game clock and play clock will start on the referee’s signal.
