Mouthpiece
« on: September 07, 2025, 04:29:54 AM »
I'm a retired Ohio high school football official and I have a question.  Been watching a lot of NCAA games and see multiple mouthpieces hanging off facemasks. Are they required to be worn as in high school or does the NCAA not have the requirement?
Thanks

  • The rules are there if you need them.

Oh, the requirement is there. But, there is also a requirement for knee coverings and pads, hip pads and tail bone protectors. To put it politely, when those that write and legislate the rules offer no support to those that are assigned to enforce those rules, those rules tend to get de-prioritized. To put it not so politely, coaches, ADs, commissioners, executive committees, and NCAA administrators don’t give a s___, and do nothing but criticize officials as being too officious when officials attempt to enforce those rules. Officials are human, and don’t like criticism any more than other humans. When that happens over rules that don’t directly affect play of the game, and aren’t supported by those who put those rules in place, then, like most folks, officials tend to avoid criticism by overlooking those rules.
The dangling mouthpiece appears to something of a fashion statement. Not sure what kind of fashion that is. But, that seems to be the case, because they could just as easily simply not have a mouthpiece.

There's also a growing fad with having multiple mouthpieces so sometimes (not always) they have one in their mouth and another hanging from their facemask.  Not sure why they think that's cool.

Thanks for your reply. Good statement on what should be covered but isn't...

At least for Texas HS ball, I don't understand why TASO hasn't pressed the UIL on instituting a requirement that you cannot have an essential piece of safety equipment dangling from your facemask - it would be so easy to tell kids, 'hey, no dangling mouthpieces allowed - if it's not in your mouth, it has to come off.'

I am also a retired official and have realized that the NCAA and almost all FBS conferences call what they want to call and ignore whatever they want to ignore. I sometimes wonder why even have a rulebook anymore!!!
