2025 S-B Quiz 12
« on: November 13, 2025, 01:05:19 PM »
These were pretty straightforward. But, check me.
----------------------------------------------------------

1. 3/3 @ B-20. With the clock running with 4 minutes remaining in the 4th quarter and Team A behind by 4 points, the ball is ready for play and the umpire (or center judge) is in his regular position. Team A quickly replaces some players with substitutes, gets set for the required one second and snaps the ball. The umpire (or center judge) is attempting to get to the ball to allow the defense to match up, but he is unable to prevent the snap. The Referee shuts down the action.
RULING:
A, 3/8, B-25, ready (25).
Team A commits a dead-ball delay of game foul by moving the ball in a snapping motion the before the substitution process is complete, even if the game officials are unable to prevent the snap. The five-yard penalty is enforced at the succeeding spot, taking the ball to the B-25, where third down will continue. The play cock is set to 25-seconds, and, both, the game clock and play clock will start on the referee’s signal.

2. 3/10 @ B-40. QB A12 takes the snap and rolls out to the right. Finding no receiver open, A12 turns up field and runs. After making the line to gain, A12 breaks stride as if he is going to slide feet first at the B-27, stays upright and runs for a touchdown.
RULING:
A, 1/10, B-27, game clock running (40 and running).
Any time a ball carrier simulates or fakes a feet-first slide the ball is dead and that location and time. This is not a foul – only a dead-ball.

3. 1/10 @ B-45. After the ball is ready, Team A comes to the line and the clock goes to 0:00 to end the 3rd quarter. A21 was disqualified late in the 3rd quarter for Targeting and legally remained in the team area. Between the end of the 3rd quarter and the start of the 4th quarter, A21 is flagged in the team area for Unsportsmanlike Conduct.
RULING:
A, 1/25, A-40, snap (25). A21 is ejected.
By committing any sort of foul, disqualified player A21 is now ejected from the game, and must leave the playing enclosure and remain out of view of the playing field, and remain under the supervision of team personnel.

4. 3/10 @ A-35. A21 catches a forward pass and fumbles when tackled at the A-44. The fumble is recovered by grounded A24 five yards in advance of the fumble. During the pass, passer A12 is roughed by B75.
RULING:
A, 1/10, B-36, ready (25).
The penalty for a roughing the passer foul can be enforced from the end of the last run, if there is no change of team possession during the down. The 15-yard penalty is enforced at the dead-ball spot (officially, then end of A24’s run), taking the ball from the A-49 to the B-36, where Team A will put the ball in play, 1/10. Both clocks will start on the referee’s signal.

5. 4/10 @ A-45. A91’s punt lands at the B-8, is then touched by A33 at the B-4 and the ball then rolls into Team B’s end zone. Team B recovers it two yards deep in the end zone and advances the ball into the field of play and is downed at the B-3.
RULING:
B, 1/10, B-20, snap (25).
A scrimmage kick untouched by Team B before touching the ground in B’s end zone is dead immediately upon touching the ground in the end zone. The result of the down is a touchback, and Team B is awarded a new series at the B-20. The play clock is set to 25-seconds and starts on the referee’s signal. The game clock will start on the snap. (By recent rulings regarding other situations in which a player advances the ball after it becomes dead, the advance by Team B is ignored.)

6. 4/10 @ B-45. A91’s punt is high and deep, and returner B21 drifts back 2-yards deep in his own end zone and muffs the punt in flight. The loose ball is recovered and downed by A80 with the ball still in the end zone.
RULING:
A, try, B-3, no clock (40 and running).
Since the scrimmage kick was touched by Team B before it touched the ground in B’s end zone, the ball remained alive and in play. A80’s legal recovery of the ball resulted in a touchdown for Team A, with a try down to follow.

7. 1/10 @ B-25. Team A, down by 3 points, snaps the ball with 12 seconds remaining on the game clock in the 4th quarter. QB A12 can find no receiver open, scrambles outside the tackle box and throws the ball away beyond the neutral zone, and the play ends with 6 seconds remaining. The defense had 12 players on the field at the snap but B21 was hustling to get off the field, and the ball was snapped just before B21 exited the field.
RULING:
A, 1/5, B-20, snap (25).
B21 commits a live-ball foul for illegal substitution. The 5-yard penalty is enforced at the previous spot, taking the ball to the B-20, where first down will be repeated.

8. 2/10 @ B-40. Late in the game and neither team has a timeout, A22 runs for 8 yards and is tackled short of the line to gain. The game clock reads 1:58 when A22 is downed. B54’s helmet came off (not a direct result of a foul) during the play. Play clock?
RULING:
A, 3/2, B-32, 1:58 (4), ready (40). B54 may not participate in the next down.
Since team B has no available time-out, B54 may not participate in the next down because his helmet came off. The play clock is set to 40-seconds, and, both, the play clock and the game clock will start on the referee’s signal.

7.  :06 seconds will remain on the game clock.
8. Assuming the play started outside 2:00.  A the end of this play (1:58), we will now have the 2:00 timeout and the play clock will be set to :25 after the timeout.  1:58 on the game clock, no 10 sec runoff.

Concur on both. Got in a hurry, and haven’t had these situations on the field, yet.
Thanks!
