Arkansas Try. Swear I heard the referee announce: “Arkansas number 70 is reporting as number 41.” WHAT? What does that mean. They can’t say they are some other number. They can change numbers, as long as they report the change to the referee.
Maybe it was just a bad choice of words. Maybe he meant to say something like: “The jersey number of Arkansas 70 has been changed to 41.”
Do you think that is what happened?

(We don’t have this in FED rules.)  What is the rationale for this requirement?  Is there a penalty if #70 doesn’t report?

Yeah, I didn’t actually see the Arkansas player wearing either number, so I couldn’t connect the R’s announcement with what I could see. But, later, an LSU player changed numbers, as well, and I actually saw that player with the changed number, so it became obvious that they had actually changed numbers. And that’s all OK. The announcement just confused me.

To answer Bama’s question, yes, it is a UNS to change your number to something other than what is on the ‘game day roster’ -and enter the game -  without reporting the change to the referee.
