Touchdown at 2 minutes
« on: December 01, 2025, 03:23:41 PM »
I'm starting to think there was a bulletin play that covers this.  Petty simple.   Team A scores a touchdown with 2 minutes remaining in the 2nd or 4th period.   Do we run the try and then have the 2 minute timeout or timeout and then the try?

I don’t have authoritative info, just offering an opinion.
Play the try, then have the 2-minute time out. Makes no sense to do otherwise.
Let us know is you get/find authoritative info.

That is the intuitive response, but the Rule Book seems to omit any direction on this scenario (unless I missed it).  While this is NCAA forum, in Texas, the TASO High School mechanics manuals don't mention this either they simply state:  During the second and fourth periods, the clock shall be stopped for an official’s timeout at 2:00 when the ball is dead. When the ball is live, the covering official will stop the clock when the ball is declared dead and the clock is at 2:00 or under. R will then face the press box and announce, “Two-minute timeout.”

I had this happen this year and did the try and then the 2 minute timeout. Makes sense to me as the try is an untimed down.

I agree. The try is not affected by the clock, and is an extension of the touchdown. As such, it makes sense that any interruptions should wait until after the try.

I sent the question to Shaw and he replied to do the Try and then 2 minute timeout.

Wish I’d said that. 😂

That probably needs to be in the book somewhere. As someone pointed out earlier in this thread, there’s no actual rule support for playing the try first.

I’ll make a prediction. The rule won’t be changed/appended/edited, but an AR will be added to cover this situation. That will work, but, it would better if the rule would be edited.
