You're absolutely correct. Unfortunately however, when you allow "kids to be kids" you often wind up standing in a much deeper pile of "Dung" than anticipated. Before ANYTHING else "Football" was intended & designed to provide a regulated environment where physical conditioning, prowess, and limited/directed strategy could be combined in an enjoyable, REGULATED activity governed by specific rules designed to eliminate dangerous, excessive & counter productive and/or unfair behavior. Participation is dependent on acceptance of the Rules of the game defining behavior.

When those rules are ignored, or abandoned, violators are subject to appropriate penalty as determined by existing rules, subject to decisions by escalating levels of appointed enforcement and where necessary expanded review.  Supportive fans and media speculation & interpretation are NOT material to authorized determinations which may require additional & superior level considerations.

The lessons learned, although currently "unhappy", may prove far more beneficial in the long run to players determined to be discipline, and their team.

1905: Often called the "death harvest," this year saw President Theodore Roosevelt intervene due to widespread injuries and at least 18-19 direct fatalities, pushing for rule changes like the forward pass.

1909: Another grim year, with 26 deaths reported, showing that changes didn't immediately stop the carnage.

1931: This year recorded the highest number of fatalities in modern history, with 40 direct deaths and 9 indirect ones (like heatstroke), totaling 49 deaths, prompting intense scrutiny.

Not sure what your grim statistics suggest, other that the dangers of "Football" have been a serious concern for decades.  Rules and tactics have been consistently reviewed, adjusted and altered since 1931, and will likely continue to be adjusted going forward as the game itself continues to changs, intensify, progress and continue to provide a safe environment for competition interested in by players from pre-teen to seniors.

Unfortunately we have yet to reach the absolutely PERFECT requirements to erase ANY and ALL possible threats, but THAT EFFORT continues.  The serious effort to continue removing ALL hazards from participation continues, and has progressed significantly since your stated time table (1931).  God willing those efforts will continue, as will the constant progress the sport has enjoyed since 1931 in achieving (doubtful} "perfection.

The basic mission continues, ever increased removal of unintentional consequences that threatens participants, at each progressive level.  Thankfully, the sport has progressed, substantially, since 1931, but as seems ALWAYS the case, has yet to reach ABSOLUTE PERFECTION. However, the "chase" and search goes on. do you have any practical, tangible suggestions?

And to bring the thread to its natural conclusion, Gainesville for all its legal efforts, got demolished last weekend in the state championship, 62-21 - with all of its players.

Congratulations to BOTH teams for reaching the ultimate competitive level, and a "tip of the hat" to the eventual winner, whose final effort proved successful.
