Untimed Down or Not
« on: December 15, 2025, 06:32:49 PM »
the question is: does R, now A, have to run a play during an untimed down.....the crew was split on what to do, some said yes, some said no

Last play of the game.
K is down by two and tries a game winning field goal.
The kick comes up short of the goal line and is caught on the three yard line. In celebration, and before any whistle is blown as it is still a live ball, R throws the ball forward 40 yards down field.
The illegal forward pass falls incomplete.
Flag is thrown
Time has expired.

State referees decision.

Rule 3-3-4b3 sez' : Fouls that specify a loss of down don't git an untimed down. IFP is such = game over.

Decline = game over

Accept = penalty enforcement includes Loss of Down, no untimed down - game over

This rule was put in place several years ago after a "happening" in a Louisiana state championship game.....

SCENE : A team scores with 0;05 left in the game and goes up by two....

i : The kickoff return turns into a 'rugby scrum' ;

II: After several backward passes, a return player is about to be tackled at K's 20;

III: He then decides to throw a FORWARD pass into K's endzone  ^flag ;

IV: His teammate catches it  ^TD ;

V:  ^talk ^talk yEs: Officials confer as time has expired;

VI: Penalty has to be accepted to cancel TD, with an untimed down :o ;

VII: Ball placed @ K's 25, Hans -a foreign exchange student- enters the game  :bOW ;

VIII: Hans kicks a 42 yard feld goal  ^good.

IX: Hans and Prom Queen prance off into the bayou & NFHS adds Rule 3-3-4b4  tiphat:

EDITOR''S NOTE....

I voted no, as I felt if it occurred on a 4th down play, the ball shoud be turned over to B with an untimed down.
I may have posted this before, but they say repeating ones self can be a mark of senility.  tR:oLl
