As an official you'd better know what contact constitutes targeting, and you'd better know that the penalty includes disqualification. But it literally does not matter whether you know the rule about how long he'll have to sit next Saturday.

This week's crew is not responsible for calculating the correct suspension length. And next week's crew is not responsible for making sure #22 stays off the field in the first half. Simply put, suspensions are not part of our job.

But I guarantee there will be at least two questions on the upcoming CFO 100 test about the new TGT suspension rule. As if knowing suspension lengths makes you a more talented official on the field.

  • The rules are there if you need them.

  • Exceed the standard... or don't do the job
While I don't disagree, I do see some value in being able to speak competently to a significant rule, that had not-trivial changes, should a coach ask me about it... only from the perspective that I'd rather be able to tell him instead of saying 'I don't know.'

My response would be, “Ask the Commissioner. I have nothing to do with that.”

I have enough to do without keeping up with stuff outside of my purview.

That's like when I worked baseball and they would always ask if there was a winner when the game gets called due to rain or darkness.  I just referred them to their league's bylaws.

Only problem with giving an answer, he will likely not remember it that way and tell someone else you said XXX when you said YYY
" I don't make the rules coach!"
