One thing about a Fair Catch Kick

AR 2-16-11-III does make it clear that the fair catch team may NOT elect to put the ball in play by snap, then change their mind after the ball is ready for play. After the ball is ready for play for first down, they are locked in to playing a scrimmage series.

(In NFHS, they can change to a FCK after a foul by either team - pre-snap or live ball - when first down is continued/repeated. Glad the NCAA nixed that option.)

But, still don’t know what to do about the kicker getting blocked before he has advanced 5-yards, or ball has touched the ground or a player/official. I hope they figure out that they need to give the kicker this protection on FCKs, and then treat the rest of the down as a scrimmage kick.

In any video of this rare play, the kicker isn't interested in coverage just is his kick  ^good or  ^no. IMHO, worrying about the kicker's protection on a FC>FK is like us worrying about Halley's Comet leaving it's orbit and crashing on a football field in West Texas  ;D.

Well, people said that it is highly unlikely that somebody would jump up over the sideline, control a forward pass while airborne, throw the ball to a teammate, and then land out of bounds... :)

Coincidentally enough, Halley’s core is roughly the same size and shape as my West Texas home town.
Nobody expected the kicker to be targeted for injury before 2010, either. But, obviously such a dastardly deed had happened, so a rule was created. If some coach figures out that the kicker isn’t protected during a fair catch kick - the one time it happens in everybody’s career - he’ll take the opportunity to take the kicker out.
Yes, the ball should be treated as a scrimmage kick, but the players need to be treated like a free kick. Easy enough to fix, if the powers that be will just think things through.
