Foul on scoring play in OT
« on: September 28, 2026, 09:22:52 AM »
Blackhawks the first to have possession in OT score a TD.  There is a facemask by the Bears.  The foul can be enforced on the try, giving the Blackhawks the try at the 1 1/2 yard line....but can the foul be enforced on the Bears' succeeding spot, meaning the Bear's would have first and goal from 25?

According to 8.2 crew thought so

Thanks

Yes, the options are on the try or @ the succeeding spot which is the 10-yard line in OT in most states that use the NFHS OT procedures.

I'm going to disagree with you there, but I think it's the same disagreement we've had in other threads.

The By The Book overtime rules include interpretation 3.1.1 Sit C (page 90) that unequivocally states that the try is the succeeding spot.

The 8-2 rules and 2-41-10 allow for the succeeding spot to be the subsequent kickoff, which there is none in overtime. The edit to 8-2 this year that allows enforcement on the "try or succeeding spot" is now redundant, since those are the same thing by default.

That being said, all OT procedures are state adoptions, so your state may offer specific guidance to allow enforcing on the following series.

With that interp that came out, states can say what carries over.

They allowed fouls on the TD of the last play of the game get carried over to the potential overtime.
If your state allows this interp, then your play can certainly be carried over.

It's basically saying "You can enforce this foul on the try or the down after the try at your discretion."

That's done and dusted.  NFHS has IMHO been VERY CLEAR in that the "new standard" is that the "try" has been replaced by "succeeding spot" without exception.  IMHO, that discussion is over.

You can't say that.  Every state has the option to do this or not as every state sets their own OT rules.

The CORRECT answer is you have to check with your state but if they allow the carry over to OT then yes.

Did you even read my post????   it says  " ..... in states that USE the NFHS OT rules. IMHO that is very clear and unambiguous.

States decide.  That is what NFHS clearly said.  Why can't you just say that?  Dude you are weirdly obsessed with this stupid rule change and just can't say what the NFHS has already said.  It allows states to decide.

Massachusetts has chosen to use the NFHS OT procedure as written with no state options so we would enforce on the try or carry-over to the next series.
