Hammerhead Whistle Review

I bought the mini $5.99 and mighty $4.99 from ebay with free shipping. (see links below)

They sent me 4 whistles. (mini pealess, mini with pea, mighty pealess, and hammershark)

The mini pealess is not as loud as the Fox 40 which I have used exclusively for the past 10 yrs.

The mini with pea is almost as loud as the Fox 40 but not as shrill.

The mighty pealess is louder than the Fox 40 but not as shrill.

The hammershark......... don't waste your money, it's that bad. It is listed on the website as a "First Generation Pealess Retro" whistle in limited supply.

All of the whistles do project the sound away from your face and ears.

I only wish they had a model with the cushioned mouth guard like the Fox 40.

I am going to try the mighty with pea and the mega with pea. Even though the pealess mighty is as loud as the Fox 40, I just don't like the sound it makes. The mini with pea sounds much better to me. I suppose I will use the mighty with pea or the mega with pea this year.

The size of the whistles compared to the Fox 40 Classic:

(All measurements are approximate)

The mini with pea and pealess are about the same overall size of the Fox 40 classic.
They are both 1/4"  narrower but the chamber is 1/4" deeper.
The mouthpiece opening is twice as deep but only 3/4 as wide.

The Mighty is virtually the same width as the Fox 40 with a deeper chamber than the mini.
The mouthpiece opening is 1.5 as deep as the Fox 40 and virtually the same width.

I do not know the size of the Mega, but was told by the company that the mega is larger than the mighty.

The hammerhead whistle is made in Korea, while the Fox 40 is made in Canada.

I recommend buying from ebay as the cost seems to be better there.

Apparently, none for sale on Ebay anymore.  Bought the Mighty with pea through their site.

OK bought it used it. Going back to fox 40. The hammerhead, according to my crew and kickers, can not be heard over crowd noise. I find it more cumbersome than other whistles.

I have gone back to using my Thunderer also.

They're (BestWhistle) actually just down the road from me, so I met them to pick up mine ( I got all three - the Mini, the regular, and the Mighty).  The Hammershark was their prototype and I wasn't interested in a prototype.  I use the regular-sized one in games and the only feedback I gave BestWhistle was of the need for a rubberized mouthgard.  The mouthpiece seems a bit thin and I'm concerned I might bite through.  Compared to my old ACME Thunderer, I find I finish the game with less ringing of the ears, and so far no one on the crews have complained about not hearing my whistle.  They're also working on a finger-whistle version.  I commented that most of our association uses a finger whistle, so they'll need that option if they ever hope to make inroads around here.

I used the Mighty with pea.  not loud.  While the sound was AcmeThunderer-esque, it wasn't my cup of tea.  Will be trying the Mighty pealess soon.

I agree with Fadamor.  My ears haven't been ringing anywhere near as much, and I've been white-hatting (and blowing the whistle a lot more) so far.  It definitely could use a mouthguard, and haven't had anyone report trouble hearing the whistle.  Other than the missing mouthguard, my only "issue" has been that (since I bought the Mighty with pea) it's a bit heavier than I'm used to, and it usually feels like I'm about to spit the whistle out while I'm blowing it.  I'm getting used to the weight, though. and I really like the thundering effect that the pea gives.

I'm waiting on the finger whistle as well.  I somehow lost the one I'd been using the last couple of years, and have been using a really old Thunderer finger whistle.  Did they mention how soon they expect to have one out?

Tried the pealesss Mighty.  Not my cup of tea.  While it is loud, the pitch was more like a 'train whistle', per a crewmember of mine. - all aboard...

I think the real advantage will come in November with the cold and wet.  The peas in my ACME Thunderers usually would start jamming up around the beginning of November as the cork started getting wet.  The peas in the Hammerheads are plastic wireframe spheres, so they're not likely to gum up.  We'll see.
