I saw it also, the catch that was ruled out of bounds was a TD, but I am sure we all have made a 'bad call' before. I do not know if he got in for sure at the end there when they were trying to run it up the middle, but I did think they were taking a while to blow the forward progress dead, and get the ball spotted, not to mention I believe I saw some assisting the runner as well on those plays as well.

Two bad calls at end of close game - terrible timing.  Run up the middle on last play - didn't see the ball but almost every player was over the line...yikes...

Agree.   ^good

I don't know why some wing guys are so timid about putting the ball in the EZ.  The U could have really helped.

But remember, the U is trained, under NCAA/NFHS mechanics to ignore touchdowns. The mechanics that follow mean the U is effectively emasculated.

No, they are trained to not call a TD.  That is different than ignoring a TD.  Most umpires will give a small signal (hand over heart, grab whistle, etc.) to tell the wings that the ball is in the endzone.

Most of the time this should be used not as him calling TD, but for him to tell the wings that the ball is accross the GL. The Wings have to make the decision weather the ball was dead by rule before it crossed the GL as a live ball still.

Exactly!  In my pregame, I always ask what the the U will do when just such a play occurs.  Usually, the good U's have a signal or sometimes a verbal indication that they have the ball in the end zone.  They do NOT signal TD because they do not know if the ball carrier was down short of the goal line, they just know that he's in the end zone with possession of the ball when the signal.

They key here, in my mind, is don't put the ball on the 2 inch line.  Also, don't make the ball carrier "buy" the TD.  I think way too many times, we make the ball carrier be way in to the end zone before giving them their due forward progress, 99.9 yards from their own goal line.

Why can't a U signal a touchdown? If the ball is caught, right in front of the U, why not signal the major?

Heck, in Canadian mechanics, the U is responsible for short-yardage and goal-line plunges.

Because the wings are responsible for forward progress.  U can help, but should not give the TD signal.

On plays like these, we're trained as wings that if we don't see the ball, to crash until (a) we do see the ball, or (b) we get a sign from the umpire. On this play, the wings can see the supposed runner is on his feet in the end zone. Even with no hints from the umpire, all I need here is to see that the original runner still has the ball - no matter where he is now - and I'll signal the TD. The result is often a late signal, but it works.

Looking at the video:  It appears that in short yardage situations you folks position the umpire as a very short wing.

Well, when your field's a mile and a half wide, you gotta do what you gotta do.

That's the general mechanic, yes.

Anybody got video of this game and the disputed calls?  I see Jack Nicklaus' grandkid who is a "top prospect" was suspended for a couple games after apparently flipping the bird to the officials or somebody after these calls.  The coach sounds like a piece of work too.  This is getting quite a lot of press and I missed it...

He was indeed suspended for telling someone that they were "number one".  This link doesn't show all the plays, only the game-ender, but does have the gesture...

Oh boy was that a TD...  ::).  Those refs really kicked that call bad.  As for the #1 salute, probably not such a good move on national TV kid...
