Is It Just Me?
« on: September 12, 2010, 05:15:59 PM »
Seems that after we went to the four point suspension, it was very rare to see a helmet come off.  Now they seem to come of almost every game from the NFL to High School.  We had one this past Friday where the punt receiver lost his helmet and had to be attended to for several minutes.  Both my B and J told me he was tackled straight on the body and the helmet came off before he hit the ground.  Seemed that his injury was due to his hitting his head on the artificial turf w/o the protection of his helmet.  The NCAA is very concerned about concussions - loosing your helmet during the play is an invitation for a head injury.  Anybody else seeing this trend?  ???

Yes.  I talked to one coach and he blames the helmet manufacture.  They spent all that money on their helmets and he said they will see 2 or 3 a game come off from a normal hit not involving the helmet.

It's not the helmet manufacturer, it's whoever is fitting the helmets.  You can't just pull it out of the bag and stick it on someone, the inside pads need to be fitted to each individual.  Then air needs to be added (to most helmets).  I have 85 players who have now played 4 games, and not one helmet has come off during a play yet.  But we spend a half a day in July fitting each individual player.

I saw helmets off 8 times in my JUCO game Saturday. I am now seeing more at high school.

A properly fitted helmet will not pop off.  I've noticed a lot of kids wearing the chin straps loose...they are buckled, but not tight on the chin.

Had a kid Friday Night whose helmet came off two plays in a row. I sent him to the bench and told the coach to get it fixed.
