SAFETY, TD OR NEXT DOWN?
« on: September 17, 2010, 04:38:03 AM »
I had a situation last weekend being 2nd & 7 on A-9. QB A14 drops back in pocket and on the A-1 realises he is about to be sacked, he ducks to avoid the major part of the hit.

At the half yard line, A14 is hit and due to the momentum of the hit both A14 and B71 tumble into the EZ, where A14 loses the ball and it is recovered by team B in the EZ.

Looking at the video, it appears A14's left ankle scraps the turf whilst the ball carried by A14 was in the EZ but if it did it was not seen by any official.  No other part of A14's body touches the ground as he landed on top of B71 in the EZ and lost the ball.

My question for my learned colleagues is does the play result in:

a, a TD;
b. A's ball at the half yard line; or
c. safety

Cheers

Would have to see it...but based on your description I think I'd have a TD for B.

I'd also agree that you need to see it but based on the description it's got to be a TD for B or A's @ the 1/2 yard line if a forward progress call is warranted.  On the possible FP call we would have to be sure that A still had possession and control of the ball after the initial hit while he was moving backwards into the EZ and then lost the ball as he was landing on B in the EZ.

Just given the description here, I'd probably have TD B.  As you describe on the possible safety result "Looking at the video, it appears A14's left ankle scraps the turf ...", pretty sure that there's not much there for an on-field call if even after watching it on video the description is "it appears ....".
