Taunting?
« on: September 20, 2010, 10:48:51 AM »
I didn't make this video up, but found it perusing some boards this weekend.

I can think of several reasons that "might" be, to pass on one and not the other, but the general outcry from the TTU faithful is that they are equivalent, what say you?

Can't tell without hearing what they said.  I'll go with the officials on the field.

That has been my stance... if one gets up and says... yeah, baby, yeah... and the 2nd guy drops the F bomb... we have two different issues..

There was a taunting call on Tech late. I thought that the Tech guy spit on the Texas player. May not have, but sure looked like it. Anyone else think so/

Does look like he got a " get your butt back in the huddle" from the official. I think I pass on this unless something was said.

They look virtually the same to me and at that point in the game if you pass on one you probably pass on both regardless of what was or was not said.  The non-verbal taunt of standing over an opponent is enough to warrant a flag by itself especially in the case of the Texas player who took a step toward the opponent in order to stand over him and punched his chest at the same time.  This action is specifically outlined as an unsportsmanlike foul with or without speaking (and he clearly said something).  This is a case where I believe you have got to have crew continuity on your philosphy in dealing with these situations.  H passes on a situation that he believes can be handled with some preventive officiating and L is quick with a flag on a very similar situation.  I'm not saying either is wrong but the crew should at least be consistent as a crew.

Body language tells me neither player is saying something complimentary like "Nice hit" - I've got a flag on both.

So you would flag a guy for standing up and screaming "Whoooooooo" after a big play?

The only way I see a difference is if one did use some foul language towards the other player and the other did not.

I'll bet the official on the field heard something foul on that flag.

I think the act alone warrants the flag especially early in the game.  It could be said that not throwing the flag on the Texas player directly led to the actions of the TTU player two plays later.

Body language alone triggers a twitch in the flag finger, but I think it really depends on what's being said. If case number one is a "All day long .... ALL DAY LONG" ... then it's appropriate to step in and tell white to get back to the huddle and watch the mouth. If it's a "Eat that, bitch," I gotta flag.

Maybe the R/U had a chat with their respective backfields and issued a warning? "Guys, players are getting too mouthy. That stops, now. Any more of that will not be tolerated." (Though that implied philosophy of altering standards is up for debate on its merits...)

Again, I'd have to know what was said.

I had a player look me right in the eye Saturday, and yell. "Oh, my GOD... Can't anybody block?" Mighta looked like he was yelling at me. He wasn't.
I had a player in the same game walk away from a tackle, look left casually and utter, "Suck my dick" to an opponent. Probably didn't look like much - but  ^flag...

Reminds me of a useless official I worked a game with several years ago.  Play ended in a team area so I was there with the L.  All of the sudden the L heaves the hanky high in the air.  Surprised me as I was there and saw no late hits and heard no unsportsmanlike chatter.  He reported to the R that the head coach said something unsportsmanlike to him.  I did not question but when we got in the locker room I asked the L what was said.  His answer "I don't know but i could tell by the way he was looking at me it was not good."  That was the first zebra I ever scratched and refused to work with again.

A runner in open field turns and points the ball at the nearest defender while high-stepping into the endzone is not taunting if his dialogue is "great job, man, you were fast and it was an honor to have you chase me wooooohooo!!!"    ????

One of the things I noticed early in the game - this seemed to be some of the youngest officials I've seen in the Big 12 - especially the L. I do have to say these young guys were very fast and could actually keep up with the players.  But I think the L got some seasoning in this game.  While we are officiating, we have to remember there is a ballgame going on out there - I wasn't there to hear what was said, but that flag really came out fast and hard - a sign of an emotional response.  Maybe upon futher review of the play in context, it may have stayed in his pocket.
