Thought my eyes were playing tricks on me
« on: September 27, 2010, 09:38:16 AM »

Looked odd to me in real time, so I had to go back and check.  There is was plain as day... a measurement with double R plackets in view.  Is this something that happens often?  I was looking for the black hatted R later in the game and couldn't find him.  Maybe he changed...

The SEC uses an "alternate official" as the clock operator, and they are located on the sidelines with the down box.  The alternate could be any position.  In this case, it happened to be an R.

Thanks, AB.  That makes sense.  Is it normal for him to step on the field during measurements?

Out in the middle of the field?  No.

But take a look at this measurement, it's on the sideline, or very close to it.  He's going to be with the box, so if it's close to the sideline, he'll be in the shot.

And you'll notice, the alternate official, no matter what his normal position, will always wear a black hat.

Probably no more than the camera man who is standing in front of #32. It appears this measurement is taking place right on the Auburn sideline.
