Defensive Holding - What's The call
« on: October 08, 2010, 10:40:18 PM »
3rd & 6 @ the A44.  A runs a screen pass with QB rolling right and back A-28 brush blocking and sliding out to the left side.  As QB turns and throws a screen pass to A-28, blitzing LB B-56 realizes he's beat and turns and immediately tackles A-28 at the A41 yard line (behind the NZ), as the ball lands incomplete at the A43 (also behind the NZ).  We've got a flag down for defensive holding.

What options do we have to offer Team A?

Why would you offer any options?  Mark off 10 from prev spot and it will be a 1st and 10 for A

Agreed.  I suppose they could decline and make it 4th and 6 if they really wanted to.

Not in my game they couldn't :) The choice is obvious so I'm not going to give any options, simply enforce the penalty.

Agree also, I wouldn't give them the option but stranger things have happened.   ;D

Botched the original post as the down and distance was actually 3rd & 16 @ the A44.  The original question should have been would the call be any different if the INC pass following the tackle landed at the A45 instead of the A43?

But to get to the point of the question, does the automatic 1st down for a "Illegal contact with eligible receiver" apply only when a legal forward pass crosses the NZ, and does the "contact foul" have also have to occur beyond the NZ?

Yes, I've seen the saying "Beyond and beyond" for a first down.

I would ask if it were the last play of a qtr, or more likely, the last play of the game.  Depending on the score they may not want to extend the period.
