It's not in the job description of Musberger, Herbstreit, et al. to be rules experts. So it's pretty much just funny when they make incorrect pronouncements on the rules.
But here's what I don't get: if you were a producer for ABC or ESPN, would it be THAT hard to have someone--ANYONE--in the booth or the truck who kinda knows the rules? Granted, they're not gonna go hire someone just to give rules interpretations.
But they've got talking heads who are calling the game and commenting each week on the rules.
Wouldn't it make the televised product better if they at least had someone in their ear who could clarify/explain something like that?
I'm not saying that at the drop of the hat they should be able to speak intelligently about a 1-pt safety or the blocking zone disintegrating. But faceguarding? As Gob Bluth would say...
