Coach comments about the UIL/TASO situation
« on: October 16, 2010, 10:10:23 AM »
Apparently the UIL has sent out an e-mail and link to football coaches to allow them to check on UIL registered officials in their area, thus finally starting to get on their radar screen.   We were volunteered this information last night in our pre-game conference with coaches.   They told us that there were only 7 registered members of our chapter (out of about 110), with none of the white hat crew chiefs on the list.   They were concerned about what was going to happen in week 10, and we told them that nobody on my crew intended to register and that as long as we were not given an order to not go, we would show up at our week 10 game as scheduled to offer our services.  He gave us a high-five on that one.

Later during the game, we had an ineligiable receiver (covered up) go downfield.  When I was enforcing the penalty, the head coach asked if a loss of down was included.   I said no.  He then said that if we were UIL registered, he's probably get his loss of down.  We all got a good laugh out of that.

I had a HC/AD tell me the UIL should be "horse whipped" for starting this mess.

In a great, intense game last night, with 2 minutes left, the BJ had a DPI call against my sideline allowing the home team to take the lead.  Upset about having just given up the go ahead score, the HC says, "Where are you guys from anyway?"  My retort was one of my all time greats, "Coach, you realize you are complaining about one of the 10 UIL registered officials in our chapter."  He gave me this look I can't describe, but I was grinning ear to ear.  He ended up winning the game...

I really hope this is one of the great untold stories of this mess, that secretly we DO have the coaches' support.   That will be critical come Week 10.  I know that most of them are under great pressure right now just to get through the season and rellay do not have the time nor energy to deal with our situation.  I know they are severly constricted as to any public  support they can offer but anything they can do outside the public eye is great.
