Simple enough - make sure next week EVERYONE uses pink whistles.  Then the ball is in the association's court with respect to playoff games.

I don't get it.  Is there something that says the whistle has to be a certain color?  Would they be doing this if the officials had the old chrome pee whistles or a mix of chrome and black?  What about the white rubber whistle cover?  Sounds like the association is getting a bit anal.

I had the same thought!  I've never seen a rule about Black whistles...  This sounds like its just a big powertrip!!!!  I like the all pink idea too.  If I was there I'd join them...

We were kicking around the other day how about pink flags? A little much maybe but penalizing cancer sounds good to me.

We might get away with the whistles (don't know where we'd get pink ones, though), but for us, the flags are specified to be international yellow.

Saw this article in an Austin, Texas news site.  Interesting.

Ridiculous...  We had a game the other week where the home school was hosting their version of cancer awareness.  The coach told me they had a 15 yr breast cancer survivor who he wanted to be at midfield during the coin toss.  Simple enough, no big deal, I asked if she'd like to toss the coin.  It was neat for her to do that and didn't have an impact on the game or anyone there in a negative way.  Sounds like these "association" guys have way too much time on their hands and they must not have much self confidence if their feathers get ruffled so easily, over cancer awareness - Really?

I believe that same association have used blue flags in the past one weekend in support of protate cancer awareness and got some good publicty with it.

From their website.......
Quote
High School football officials throughout the state of Washington will raise the profile of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month by replacing traditional yellow penalty flags with blue flags during varsity games played on September 17-19, 2009.

One of the organizers, referee Jason Capps, says the idea has really taken off. "All over the state this weekend will be blue flags." Each official is donating to the cause. "How do you pay for 1,200 flags that are $6 a piece? All the officials in the association agreed to pay for them themselves," said Capps.

Wow.

My crew has worn pink whistles every game in October for the last 3 years for both HS and college games.  I thought EVERYBODY did it.

Mr. Stardahl didn't think this one through.

I'm thinking the "urinary olympics" from the state association was that they didn't ask for approval.  Sounds like they could pick another fight....

Still awaiting a reply from their chairman to my E-mail pointing out that this story had gone way beyond their state boundaries and earned them worldwide negative PR.

What's probably not in the media is that this crew, and maybe others, asked to use pink whistles and their commish said 'no', but then these guys did it anyway.  Not a foul for the whistles, but disobeying a commish, even over a silly matter, can make your career shorter.

But, of course, that's speculation....I'm 3000 miles away.

Evidently the officials' association had planned this for quite some time, but the directive from the state arrived by email only two days before the game.

Any "Commissioner" who insists on getting involved in matters like this, (whistle colors for charitable events) has way, way too much time on his hands, or considers his role to be imperial.

My white hat stopped in at an officials supply store yesterday and sent out a text to the crew asking if anyone needed anything.  I requested a pink whistle!!!
