Zebra Ware Evaluations
« on: November 15, 2010, 09:16:35 AM »
What have been your thoughts on the Zebra Ware evaluations?  I know Houston does them do other areas of the state use them?  What has been the participation rate of your schools?  I believe it is a great idea and I am very interested in the data it has generated (talk about accountability but that is another thread).  I had 11 coaches turn in the evaluations out of 28 schools served (14 games @ 2 coaches each) is this about an average participation rate?  Is there any difference between the coaches evaluations if they loose or win?

The response rate I had was about 16% or about the same as yours. The problem with the Zebra evaluations is the coaches cannot rate individual officials. All of the evaluations come out exactly the same for all 5 officials. I had more evaluations (from coaches) on the old cards this year than with Zebra

Of course most of it is exactly like the UIL cards and you can see who won and who lost by the evaluations.

You CAN rate the individual officials on Z-W.  However, from what I've seen most rate the crew as a whole like you said.  Coaches use the 1-5 ratings but Z-W converts it to 100-80-60-40-20 for some reason.

Rick, ZW you can evaluate individual. We get that on occasion. Mostly though we have straight grades. Some coaches grade on 60 flat and rarley deviate in either direction. Others straight 100 and down grade rarley. Some 100 and then kill your score on one mishap. Point being it is not very consitently used on their side but if you understand the grader and how they grade typically you can get a good feel for their percaption of how you did. Some, if they are mad, grade you horribly even though if you watch film you do fine. Typically I tell guys if your scores trend low across many coaches you need to look hard at everything you do.

The single best way to evaluate yourself is film. Watch it. Then get buddies to watch it as well and offer advice and input.  If you are watching film, making adjustments to your game, and self evaluating, the rest takes care of itself.

Just like the cards, some coaches gave everyone a 3, some everyone a 1. Most have no value at all. The Zebra does allow for more comment although some of them are pretty hilarious.

We usually get graded as a crew.  I wish they would take more time to offer an opinion individually because I hate getting dinged for a pass intereference call when I am the Referee.

Yeah but that B is your responsibility ;). I got a 40 for rules knowledge in a 6 man game this year where I was WH. We asked for film. Coach sends and has 6 questions. All of which on film were correct calls or no calls when I reviewed with my colleagues. He even admits to the varsity secretary "the game was officiated fine we just are not getting breaks."

I have never, and probably will never, given a darn about coaches grades concerning officials.  They want to grade on judgments, mostly because they have no clue about our mechanics and only cursory knowledge about rules.

I find coaches ratings a complete waste of time.

Coaches rankings are "something".  I agree that they are usually worthless.  The UIL claims to want hold more officials "accountable".  But around 20% of the coaches actually use the accountability standards already in place so why do they want more?

Spot on with your comment.  1 out of 100 may have anything of value.  Why would my communications skills be top notch when you have been hollering and screaming all night and I elected to ignore you?

Coaches evaluations are worthless on every level.  They do not know the details of the rules, they don't know and understand our philosophies, they only care about refereeing for 30 hours a year, and they are not objective.  Nothing a coach gives us is usable--whether it's good or bad.  It's a waste of time for them to fill out the card, it's a waste of time reading the card, and it's a waste of time trying to adjust our style to please the evaluator in this instance.

Some coaches give you 0's for communication if you don't work their sideline.  Drives your averages down a lot. :)

Rick is right about being able to tell who won and lost based upon seeing the evaluation. Pretty obvious. By the way Rick, saw the weather radar last Friday night. You guys were in rain it seemed almost all night.

if you want to see massive BUTT kissing go to arkansas where the playoff's are controlled by 1 person who has hil clique and they get all the plums. now some of the arkansas boys are going to tell you that this is sour grapes and to some degree it is, but the corruption is massive.  some will tell you that the cream rises to the top and some will tell you that the b.s. floats right along.

Basically relegating the officiating community to no better than third-class citizenship under the likes of  tiphat: King Charles I and his  :!# Dancing Monkey,  :bOW the Texas Public School Administrators and their Coaches. It will set major apple polishing in motion just to get the big games that will pay no better than a C note, mileage included!

Sorry, Charlie! But I think I'll just wait to see how the court system sees this over the coming weeks/months!   z^
