Maryland vs. FLA State- Trickeration

Does anyone have the video of the MD vs. FLA ST game?

The MD qb is lined up under center, then turns and walks toward his sideline, making several hand gestures as he goes. Ball is then snapped directly to a running back who gains a couple of yards. I could not tell if he actually said anything, but it seems to me the gestures would have been enough for the foul to be called.

I admit I am not up to speed on NCAA rules, but I would have assumed that this would be the unsportsmanlike penalty (snap not being imminent) issue that had been discussed on several other occassions.

And, while I applaud Maryland for the names on the backs of their jerseys ("Courage", "Commitment", "Country", etc. ), their uniforms could have drawn a flag for being the ugliest things I have seen - at least since the VA Tech Boise State game earlier this year.

The play I'd like to see is the interception by FSU that was reviewed and upheld eventhough the replay CLEARLY showed the ball on the turf......not that I need to see it, I know what happened, I just cannot believe it was not overturned!!

Similar to the final play in the movie "the Longest yard" except the RB throws a pass to the QB as he gets past the tackles who then runs in in for a TD.

Personally, based on your description, I would have flagged it, although the rules don't really support the "snap not being imminent" interpretation. In this case, you can go with "using the substitution process to deceive", though, which has full rules support.

The Maryland play was similar to this AR...

While a team is legally set to attempt a field goal, the potential holder
for the kick goes toward his team area asking for a shoe. A shoe is
thrown on the field and the player, in motion toward his team area,
turns toward the goal line. The ball is snapped to the player in the
kicking position, who throws a pass to the player who had turned up
field after asking for a shoe. RULING: Penalty—15 yards from the
previous spot.

To whom was the QB talking?  Does it matter?

If he is saying something to the bench, I clearly see a foul.  But if he walks down the line and is talking to the TE, is it still a foul?

That is the problem I have with the whole "snap is not imminent" language.  That phrase was created by inTerp and not by rulebook. The team could do lots of things that suggest the snap is not imminent but those things should not be fouls.

If I remember correctly, he was motioning with his arms and seemed to be yelling to his bench.

In my opinion, he was communicating to the bench- I say communicating, because I could not tell if he was actually saying anything, but he was waving his arms demonstratively. Also, it looked to me that he was not actually walking down the line like he would to call an audible, but away from the line like he's walking back toward the bench. (They were deep in FL ST territory at the time).

I had that happen as a player in a game once. QB in Shotgun and I was RB just behind him. The QB wanted to talk to a R and started walking to him, the center snapped the ball off my face mask. Managed to bring it in and gain 5-6 yards, but could just as easily been a disaster! Would have made a good bloopers reel.
