Crack back? and Intentional Grounding?
« on: November 26, 2010, 11:41:29 PM »
There were 2 plays today, I'm wondering if anybody saw or had a comment on.

The first was in the Oregon/Arizona game in the 3rd quarter (~ 9 minutes or so) where the slot receiver for Oregon is just hanging out and then QB comes to his side and the rcvr drops and cuts the defensive player and the  QB scores.   He wasn't physically running/going in towards the ball, but the block is definitely against a defender going out.   Anyway, I felt this was an illegal crack back, but not necessarily obvious.

The other was in the East Carolina /SMU game.  In 2nd half, R had a OH where the QB scrambled several yards straight back (still in the box), and throws to nobody on the sideline 4-5 yards behind the line.  The R was annoucing the hold barely after the ball hit the ground.   Was just wondering if he basically quit officiating after he had the hold and didn't consider that he could have had another foul.   The IG would have been ~15 yards back and LOS, so more severe.  LJ was racing towards the R, but he was already announcing the OH foul, but I guess just stopped.  Game was on CBSCS so may have not been a lot of viewers.

I didn't see either play, but how you describe the 1st play, it would not be an ICB. It does not matter that the defensive player is moving "out", only if the offensive player blocking back towards the original position of the ball. That is all that matters, and that is not what happened how you described it. If he was standing still but went low and turned towards the ball throwing the block, then yes ICB, but if he blocks straight downfield, then no.

I'd like to see video of the B in the Oregon game dropping an F-bomb to the play clock operator when the clock went down and they were keeping it on the field.

You never know when the camera's on you.

Mike, if that is it, that is a perfectly legal block at the 11 yard line.
