offsides. ??
« on: November 27, 2010, 03:05:18 PM »
After watching the
Alburn Alabama. I noticed alot obvious defense offsides not called. Is this some kind of philosophy? I have seen this a few times lately just curious.

Can you describe the play?  What made it obvious?  Didn't see the whole game.

Was it a hand or facemask in the neutral zone?  D1 officials are not going to be too nit-picky with that.

Also, offside is a live ball foul in NCAA (different than NFHS) so a defender is allowed to get back if he is in the NZ prior to the snap.

As Elvis, a consummate rules man and overall excellent official who used to post here, would say, "It is offside, not offsides."

The one picture you provided is not directly down the line, so if you understand physics, it is not an good image to determine exactly where the player is in relation to the ball. The blue line does help, and with that you can see the defenders hand is at the same point on the blue line as the ball is and it looks at if his helmet may be slightly further than that. That all being said, it will not be called at that level if it is that tight very often. There is a good chance the official will warn the player, and write down on his card that he warned the player and told the coach, noting the time, and then it may turn into a flag after that. At the D1 level, it needs to be bigger than that. Without a warning, I doubt that call will be made by many wing officials.
If that is the worst of the ones you saw, no wonder it was not called.

But if there are more than one, what's the plural of offside? yEs:

My last post on this. I have a deep respect for my fellow officials and I am not a HACKED off fan. Offside is one of black and white calls we have adding gray does not help the game. So if you get a chance watch the game critically and ask is this how offside should be called. Good luck to every one and with out us there is no game

Also, what may add to the appearance of an offside is the fact that the snappers are actually moving the ball forward a slight ammount.

In that photo, the blue line appears to begin at the tip of the ball on the side of the defense.  I don't think you can use that as a point of reference because it sure doesn't look accurate.

If the defender in this photo is offside, it is very very slight.  As the philosophy goes, make it be there.

Odie, the longer you officiate and the higher you go up the ladder you'll find that there's a lot more gray than black and white.
