Hypothetical for Ornery and Other Like-Minded Folks
« on: December 15, 2010, 12:52:42 PM »
One of the things that has been tossed around in TASO training circles for some time is the creation of a 5-man mechanics DVD which could be freely distributed around the state to help Chapters with their 5 man mechanics training.  The DVD would primarily be footgae from actual games shot by cameras under control of the DVD-producer and not just clips taken from school game film and/or TV footage as we all know they rarely show what we really need to see.

While obviously we can't say the crews working this weekend are the best in the state, the assumption is they are at least among the best from their particular Chapter.  Therefore, they would be good candidates for the "actors" in this hypothetical DVD.

But since all the games this weekend are under the direct control of the UIL, the UIL would have to permit this to occur.   Assuming the involved schools consented, do you think the UIL would or would not permit this?  Why or why not?

If they "permitted " the filming, I am sure they would want the UIL logo all over it and would definitely not allow TASO to copyright the productions.

I would like to see a 5 man mechanics video even if it were a crew with a HS team running various scenarios much like the old pass interference video of several years ago.

This gets outside of what you're asking, Mike, but why wait until this game?  These historically are not usually the best in the playoff from a standpoint of being close, or having lots of fouls.  It just seems like there are plenty of games on a given Friday night or through the playoffs that could be used.  Just a thought.

I look forward to the Hawaii videos every year, yeah there are parts that you have to skip and weed through due to NFHS, but the idea is fabulous.  You don't have to have a "perfect" game to be able to use the video for instruction purposes...  They are also tremendous because they explain where problems lie and why and what should have been done to correct those issues.  He even uses NCAA footage to explain philosophies that are applicable to officiating football in general.

IMO model whatever you are thinking about from what Sumstine has done.  Those are GREAT.

If the UIL were to not allow TASO to film the Championship games for training purposes, that would speak volumes as to where the UIL's priorities are.

We really need training tapes ... maybe somebody under the cloak of darkness could call one of the NFL teams that seceretly tape the other teams walk throughs and tell us how to make a tape without being seen,

Probably would have been a great idea and well received if attempted at any time during the 20+ years that TASO and UIL were not feuding.

Well said Cooter! Its amazing how TASO wants to start doing right by its members now when the end could be near. Too little, way too late!

I know you are not their spokesperson but are you saying UIL no longer wants TASO to be the training entity for them.  You do know that is what they have been saying, right?

Not saying that at all - just my speculation that under the hypothetical question posed in the original post, UIL would not allow TASO to do much of anything while the feud is ongoing.  I also speculate that TASO would not give an inch to UIL on any request either.  My point was that this is a great idea - why wasn't it done before - when it would have been supported by UIL?  Why throw gas on the fire now - when it is pretty much a given that any request would be met with resistance.  One of my reasons for supporting UIL, as I have written several times on this forum, was the lack of training resources available from TASO and given to chapter trainers.

TASO may have been behind the curve on some training issues but they have cloni ians available for at least 25 years that I know of. What does UIL have to offer? Nothing that I can see.

And as I and others have pointed out, resourcves HAVE been available.  You can lead a horse to water....

I don't see the usefulness in worrying about why this DVD product was not done before.  That does nothing to help us get it done now. I am still waiting for one of you UIL-folks to explain why UIL would not want TASO to do this since supposedly TASO will still be the trainer going forward.

It's my understanding that the UIL Basketball is currently implementing films/publications from the National Federation for its "training purposes." They are definitely not making use of the TASO Basketball Mechanics Manual that was published and distributed several years back. Because of the lawsuit and more notably their egos, I really don't think that they intend to use TASO to help with training anything. Unless they can find some sympathetic  and reputable "TASO trainer" from football to come to their aid, I really think that they will go the National Federation route. Just my opinion!   z^

My question is how long have you been an official and if you felt this way all this time, what have you done to improve not only yourself but those around you?  I haven't read any suggestionsf rom you on how you have adjusted to this "problem" that has somehow prevented you from improving as an official.  It is easy to point out issues, but if WE as a collective group don't come together to solve it or provide useful information to resolve it, we will always have people out there saying"we suck".

onery1-you fall in that category of what they call in the "hood" a BAMF.  PLEASE tell us who you are so we can ignore you outright when you are seen.  It is obvious that you will not be at next year's state meeting.  If so, let us know so we can have a meet and greet. pray:;

IMHO the Federation has been behind in training for a long, long time.  They just did come out with the wings standing on or outside the sideline last year, when it had been years for everybody else.  Their 3 man baseball mechanics match no other entities.  Why in the world would Texas begin using them with their history?

Primarily because of the rampant speculation that the  tiphat: Good UIL Dr. has been heavily leaning toward the Federation, moreso for political purposes, over the past few years!   z^

My question is how long have you been an official and if you felt this way all this time, what have you done to improve not only yourself but those around you?

I attend the TASO State Meetings - and at least one clinic a year (all I can afford) - The main thing I do is read the NCAA Rules section of this forum - learned a lot.

I haven't read any suggestionsf rom you on how you have adjusted to this "problem" that has somehow prevented you from improving as an official.

Never said I was a bad official - I'm not.  I've listed my problems and suggestions many times on this forum.  Since it appears as though you are new, maybe you can read my old posts.

It is easy to point out issues, but if WE as a collective group don't come together to solve it or provide useful information to resolve it, we will always have people out there saying"we suck".

It is also easy to answer questions as they are posed on this forum - i was participating as an opposing view (or like-minded as it was put) - in my view, TASO has not been a good organization - I hope UIL wins - based on the judges preliminary rulings, it appears as though TASO won - so be it...I'll still be on the field next year

So are you saying that you are not willing to assist in finding a solution, but only benefit from being on the field?  What about those around you on that field that you are so "opposed" to being with.  What benefit do they receive from you?  I am only new to this forum, I am not new to those who are so open and free to complain.  Had many of those when I was in the military.  FlAg1

Why in the world would Texas begin using them with their history?

Because they (the Fed) would be an instantly available source of training materials to replace TASO.  The other option would be the CCA manuals and the lowest they go are 5 man mechanics.  Alternatively, the only other option I can conceive of would be for the UIL to reinvent the wheel and create a brand new set of materials.

I suspect this is why the UIL's stated intention is to have TASO continue to do the training...which I don't see happening if the local chapters start changing over to UIL.

Your interpretation of my post is not close - your quotes are not mine - and I apprecate your service to OUR country so that those of us who do not necessarily think the same as you do still have voice, even if it does obviously offend you very much.   FlAg1

And as I and others have pointed out, resourcves HAVE been available.  You can lead a horse to water....

As of TODAY, the TASO website lists 4 links for training:  Football Scrimmages, Proper Uniform Empasis, Tie Breaker System and 6-man rules.  This horse needs a deeper well.

Need a new horse (web site). But your chapter trainer has ample access to materials from this year. You also could see same on TASO word press site.
