UIL Exceptions re Announcing Numbers
« on: December 26, 2010, 09:52:47 PM »
While I would like to see this exception eliminated, it is still in effect and applies not only to announcing numbers of fouling players but to numbers of those ejected also

Weel, no real harm. The lack of announcement is to keep the offended team from the possibility of retaliating, right? And after he is ejected he isn't around to be 'hunted'.
But you are right, it would be better to be consistant.

No,the lack of announcement is to keep from embarassing little Johnny and his mommy and daddy.

I don't get this. The pee wees want the numbers announced. The bantams want the numbers announced. The 10-man varsity want numbers announced. The 12-man varsity want the numbers announced. The senior men and senior women want the numbers announced

Yet our university, which is sometimes televised, does not want the numbers announced.

What about the "Unsportsmanlike" at the 10!  Next year he doesn't set the record.  I believe it will be 1 & 10 at the 25!

I suspect we may get some more guidance from the NCAA prior to next season but I am not sure the action at the 10 is what they want flagged as UnsConduct.  That being said, I would expect most coaches would be making a serious effort before next season starts to get their guys to do NOTHING that could in any way be seen as an uns conduct act since it will be so expensive.

I've missed the nitpicking you're complaining about. Since you said you were a newbie, do you understand the issue of this topic and its history in Texas?

Chris is a hell of a white hat though.  Even if the hat itself is ugly.

His announcements were much clearer than most that is for sure.  As articulate as he is i would guess he started as a back judge.

First you nitpick, then you insult the guy by attaching a "back judge" label to him.    nAnA

On a somewhat similar topic, is it common for the R to have a microphone in regular season games in Texas?

In the larger districts, yes.  Although I know of at least one large district where the AD does not like them so they don't have them.

Some schools have them and some do not. It does not matter about classification. Some 5A stadiums will not have them and some 2A stadiums will. Then you are also pot luck on whether it works or not.

I ask because it is still fairly uncommon in Arkansas.  Some schools have them but the majority do not.  I've seen a few times where Rs struggle a little with their announcements, but I think it's because they don't have much practice using them.

Most of the 5A and 4A venues in the Greater Houston area have them, with one notable exception being Houston ISD.    z^

This is why I always reccomend that all R's should verbally announce even when they are not wearing a mic so that they will be prepared for when they are given one.

I used to work with a white hat who would turn the mic on and off when making announcements even when he wasn't wearing one. He would put his beanbag where the on/off switch would normally be and turn that on and off.

I have a feeling any evaluators would be most displeased if I start turning my beanbag on and off.

...the looney doctors might question that as well.  ;D
