As stated, most all 4A/5A venues have mics. 3A is hit and miss. With only one exception, I've never had a mic in a 2A or lower, including Private school game.

I've had several small schools with a mic.  In LaPryor, TX (can't recall if they're 1A or 2A) they made a big deal of it.  Whenever I got ready to talk, the announcer would come over the speaker an say "and here's your referee Mr. Ashley....with the call."  The band would stop, the crowd would quiet just to hear what I had to say.  Of course they would rain a chorus of "boos" if it were against the home team but it was always a chilling experience.

We have a couple of private schools with mics and they even use them on subvarsity games. Several 2A schools up here have mics. I do not know of any 1A which do.

1A sized West Sabine in East Texas has had a referee mic for years.  Until Beaumont ISD built their new stadium out on I-10 west of Beaumont, they were the only one in this corner of Texas that had a ref mic.

I don't mind the mic. I announce the penaltys outloud even on the nights (which is most of them) that I'm not Mic'ed. Since I work in the Fast Food Buisness I am worried That I might say "Holding on the Offense... Thats a 10 yard penalty.. Would You Like to Whatasize That ? eAt&
